I just posted this up to figure out if I'm the only one who thinks that a Nuriko/Miaka relationship wouldn't be so bad in the manga/anime, instead of the initial Tamahome/Miaka romance goin on. Am I alone in this notion?

    Eh... it's not a pairing I'd favor.

To be honest I never really liked Miaka and Tamahome either, because Tamahome was a lot more fun initially, when he was a jerk. XD And Miaka whines too much, so eh.

Personally, I tend to think Nuriko and Hotohori are a good match. X3 Two reasons: first, Nuriko is primarily interested in Hotohori rather than Miaka, and second, I like shounen ai. ;P I think that, given that essentially ALL the good-guy male characters show an interest in Miaka at some point, most of that is simply because of her role in the story. Quite literally: she's sucked into a legend, most legends have a love aspect, so all the male protagonists are going to be drawn to her. I think it's that more than anything else that makes them all fall for her at some point. But her choice is Tamahome - and in making that choice, she turns a sort of pre-existing plot potential, if you will, into something more.

Yeah, even Nuriko falls in love with her doesn't he? What made him change his mind? I mean, he was so intent on getting Hotohori. What happened? :glazed:

Like I said, I think it's mostly just that ALL the appropriately-aged male characters were sort of destined to fall in love with her. Like... OK, you know how in anime it's really popular for there to be a love triangle/square/whatever, because a lot of people like the conflict and want to see romance? Well, look at the story within the Fushigi Yuugi plot - the story that Yui and Miaka become central characters in. It's kind of hard to explain, but I think what happened is that anyone who COULD be a love interest for one of them pretty much had no choice in the matter - as characters in the story, part of their role was to fall in love with one of the mikos. That "destiny" of sorts would take precedence over any previous feelings they might have had, to a greater or lesser degree depending on the character and whether or not their respective miko returned their feelings.

If you'll recall, in the scene where Nuriko confesses his feelings, Miaka actually does mention his feelings for Hotohori - and INSTANTLY the "manly" Nuriko resumes his familiar overdone femininity and says something to the effect of, "That's right! :0 Who'll be a good wife for him if not me?!" (Forgive me if that's inaccurate, it's been at least three years since I saw the series.)

Anyway, my point is that I don't think Nuriko's feelings for Hotohori were changed by his feelings for Miaka - it's just that there was this sort of inescapable "cosmic pull" that drew ALL the characters to their mikos, manifesting itself in devotion and, in the case of characters of the right age and gender, varying degrees of love.

Ah, yes. Poor Hotohori, poor Nuriko, poor Tasuki, poor many other men, stupid Miaka. That's all I can say.
