    Miramax circles cult Japanese sci-fi fantasy

    Continuing its buying spree of international films, Miramax Films is in
    the final stages of picking up domestic rights to Japanese sci-fi fantasy
    Avalon directed by Mamoru Oshii whose credits include cult movies Ghost In
    The Shell and Patlabor.

    The film, which – bizarrely enough – was shot in Poland and in the Polish
    language, is set in a computer-generated game world in which players can
    perform superhuman acts of violence. The subtitled film opened on Jan 20
    this year and has grossed over $400,000 in just nine major cities. Nippon
    Herald released the film domestically and is negotiating the US sale to
    Miramax.

    Malgorzata Foremniak plays the stony-faced heroine with Wladyslaw Kowalski
    as the game master. The film, which already has a cult following in Japan,
    is shot in three distinct tones representing worlds in and out of the
    game.

    Its success continues a wave of Japanese crossover hits from Pokemon to
    current ultra-violent phenomenon Battle Royale. Miramax previously bought
    Japanese animated smash Princess Mononoke and reformatted it as a dubbed
    American film with a new cast of voices.

    Can't be bad if we're finally getting some decent anime coming our way. Hell we got a DVD release of mononoke before the japanese did, well the americans did anyway , close enough.

    I can't help but say that they do tend to *******ise some of the stuff, they do have alot of money to throw around and getting all those fancy names on the front of the mononoke box was cool and all, but the dub ended up stinking to high heaven, thats not to say that dubs in general don't suck anyway.
    But when you just stick in famous actors that haven't been picked as voice actors for the characters it really starts to blow.

    Maybe miramax might pick up the rights to jin-roh ( another oshii film ) or something similar, theres still alot of fantastic anime that gets zero press over here that i would love to see.

    I saw a trailer for this movie some time ago, and thought it was in rather muddily-pronounced Russian; glad to know it's Polish and it's not just that my Russian skills have gone to pot. I'm surprised to know the whole movie's in Polish.
    Miramax had better not try to leave out the Polish track on a DVD release if they get it - there's a reason why Oshii didn't even film it in Japanese.
    Anyway, I'm excited to see this movie.
    And about the dub - Armitage III:polymatrix seemed to suffer from the same problem.

    But I have seen it now, thanks to a fansub.

    i saw this movie when it was out in Ireland (only one or two cinemas in the country) and i bloody loved it, amazing soundtrack too.
    i'm not sure how I feel about dubbing it though...

    I saw it in the IFC also(garb bless that place, but it does rock). I liked it very much. Interesting choice of language, thought it was effective. And yes, very nice ST.
