Among me and other people has been a long standing debate and who is the best pilot from this series. Who do you think. Is it Van with his natural skill? Allen with his experiance? Or Dilandou with his confidence? You decide.

Aw, I can't choose one of the Dragonslayers? 'Cuz they were awesome.

Okay, I guess I'll go with Dilandau.

In some ways, this is almost an impossible choice to make. Each character has certain aspects in which they excel.

Allen has years of training in melef combat and thus is very technically skilled. If judged on experience alone, he would come in first without question. He is also able to keep up with Van, despite the fact that Scherazade doesn't have all the special aspects Escaflowne has.

Dilandau has a distinct advantage in the technology department. Alseides is equipped with long-distance weapons (Crima Claw, flamethrower) and the Stealth Cloak. It can also fly when not in stealth mode, and isn't too shabby in close combat either. If Van wasn't so incredibly lucky (and if he didn't have Hitomi), Dilandau would have killed him long ago.

Van has scads of natural talent, and this is made obvious in multiple ways. He's on a level with Allen, especially when you take Escaflowne into consideration. Natural talent paired with an extraordinary gymelef make Van the way he is. I don't know how well he'd do in an ordinary melef, however.

So yeah. It really depends on what criteria you're judging by. Sheer talent would probably go to Van because that's what he operates with the most. However, Allen is very close competition as he can keep up with Van even though he himself is in an "ordinary" melef. And if you're going by sheer determination to win, I'd have to say Dilandau has the other two beat.

My conclusion....I can't make a decision. *wry grin*

Allen is the best pilot and best swordsmen in the series.. Van in the end wins not because of his talent. But because of his sheer Will to Be the victor at the end of the day. That and he Goes into a Berserker Frenzy.

And Dilandau is just a Phsycho who gets beat over and over in the end. the only think that saved him was the tech factor.

Van because he seems to have no limit to his capacity. He has the most determination and therefore the most potential to rise above all.

I'd say Allen is the best pilot since he's a skilled swordsman and has trained a lot with melefs. Van is a lil more on the wild, risky style, so he has potential to beat anyone, but isn't 100% reliable. When Van gets the new second-sight technique however, he turns pretty nuts. It's too bad that Van has sort of a cursed guymelef though.

Well, Allen has the most skill. He must have had some natural aptitude for melef-fighting if he continued with it.

However, when it comes to sheer, raw talent, I'd go with Van. As Allen says during the series; "he's improved immensely in a short space of time". I'd say that his determination is definitely a big factor in this too.

As for Dilandau- I find that he uses a lot of underhanded and sneaky methods, not natural skill.

Ooooohhh, hard. I always thought Naria and Eriya were execellant pilots, but they're not on there. ^^

Allen, due to all the experience. Really, in the end experience counts more.

    Hmm...

As others have said, they've all got their merits. It's a tough decision, the answer isn't at all black and white.

Allen, clearly, has the most skill. If he's able to hold his own against guymelefs that are far more advanced than his antique Scherazade, you know the man is good. However, he's also got about 6 years of experience on both Van and Dilandau, judging purely by age as we don't know exactly when each began piloting.

Van has three notable advantages: Escaflowne's features, his own talent/luck paired with Hitomi's abilities, and the fact that he's the hero. The hero is always going to win. He does make a remarkable amount of progress from the beginning of the series to the end - which is best measured by looking at how he fares against Dilandau. Early in the series, Dilandau's beating the snot out of him. Towards the end, the tables have turned; Van's far more confident and determined, and has bonded with the Escaflowne.

Of the three, I'd have to say that Dilandau probably has the most potential - if you removed the differences in experience level and technology, I honestly think he's got the best chance. He's incredibly skilled, that much is obvious - he was captain of an elite unit of guymelef pilots at fifteen, after all. He shows a lot of natural aptitude for taking advantage of a situation (who else would think to use Crima claws for sniper tactics?), he's determined and proud, and fighting seems to be one of his few pleasures in life.

And yes... I am biased because he's my favorite character. ;P
