It's a question which has been pondering over my head for quite a long time. MP3....What does it stand for, does anyone know? and who invented it if there was an inventor?

Motion Picture Experts Group, Layer 3 encoding.

Research on the MP3 format was begun by the Fraunhofer IIS-A (Institut Integrierte Schaltingen) in 1987 and completed in 1991.

There were mp2s, yes, but they weren't very good. Low quality and poor compression made people look for a new format, which was mp3. There are better music formats than mp3, now, but mp3 is entrenched the way vhs was when dvd first showed up.

    Think of it this way:

Cassette is to CD is to DVD
    as
mp2 is to mp3 is to orb vorbis.

Each is a big jump up in quality and space. Orb encoding isn't very common yet, but I'll bet within 3 years it'll have replaced mp3 as the de facto music standard.

I still have a few mp2s :) and yeah, 'tis Ogg Vorbis.

People need to start encoding in ogg.. but please, whatever you do don't convert mp3 to ogg. Going from one lossy format to another just hurts the quality. Best way would be to just reencode, straight from CD to ogg.
