The first thing I noticed about this forum is it's art section, the quantity and quality is amazing so I thought I'd attempt to post this up to see what sorta feedback I get. I started sketching this for a friend of mine, Shen, a mod here I believe.

The scan came out a bit grey, but that is the paper I think, any tips on this? Remember I am no artist...

    welcome to the art forum!

hmm.. his head looks a bit flat at the top and perhaps if you used different B pencils you can change the grayness of it... but your drawing is really nice! your use of line and the face are very good. don't say 'you are no artist' because you are an artist ;)

Thanks for that, this is really one of my early attempts to draw in an anime context and it was enjoyable. I will try to get a number of different pencils and just get creative. There isn't shading in this drawing the greyness is the actual paper, it is none outside the pic cos I used a tool to crop that.

I guess I am an artist now... more to come.

It's shaping out nicely. Now I ain't no artist so don't look for any artistic suggestions here. Take Sera's advise, she's a good established artist.... Chejo and SaberJ2X are good too.

To make your scans better, try using a feature called "Descreen" in the options of the scanner program you use. Pick the Descreening feature for "art" or "drawing" (other selections would be "magazine," "photo," etc.) This should help the scan better. Then for further enhancement, when you use an image editing program (PhotoShop, PaintShopPro, etc.) you can experiment with Levels to even out the darks and lights a lil more.

As for the drawings themselves, keep in mind that very light shading doesn't show up properly after it's scanned (on paper I liked to make really light, subtle shading, and got disappointed when the scans didn't show them).

I appreciate all the help you guys have given me, so I will tke the time to answer most of the questions.

I am not familiar with Vash, but Shen asked me to sketch him a character for something out with M2A. He supplied examples of the sorta stuff he wants and the extended collar I think was of Vash. I took the examples and merged them into the sketch.

The arms were lightly sketched as I was gonna do a whole body sketch and the proportions kept goinf off, so I left it at the shoulders.

The Head! I like the face but the hair was vague and I really just expermented. He has a sorta bandana round his head by the way, that's why much of the forehead isn;t visible, I'll try round the head more and see what it looks like.

question:would it be possible for my sketch to be CG'ed. I am not familiar with the process and would like to learn the techniques involved. If there is a thread already devoted to this question, u can direct me to that. Also would anyone care to CG my current sketch and tell me how you done it, if anyone is interested feel free. If you need me to attach the file to the post tell me.

Also on another note, how much would a decent graphics tablet be to purchase?

let's see.. we discussed about tablets here... http://www.mangatoanime.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=9397

and cg attempts and questions were in this thread:
    http://mangatoanime.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=9675

anyways it wasn't thread specific so asking here is fine.

as well, you are welcome to peruse the tutorial thread for cg ideas. The thread is stickied in the Art Forum.

a 'decent' tablet would be several hundred dollars. I'm looking into getting a wacom graphire 3 at 4x5 and thats over the hundred dollar price range. graphire 2 can still be bought at that high price. Better tablets like the Intuos etc., can even reach a couple thousand.

Hey hey, my first ever CG without looking at tutorials yet, I wanted to see what i could manage on my own. This os what I have done so far, remember it is not finished. Also what method should I use to get nice crisp black lines for CG?

Yeah check Chejo's Sketch Only thread, there you will see the sketched version of this where Superfly also said it looked like that sketch. It is true I took inspiration from Superfly, but it was from his mikasketch which I thought was brilliant. I had double study in school so I let my mind wander and came up with a elven guy who had the bandages and such, for he is a skilled archer and was severely injured in battle, unfortunately leaving him scarred and blind. He has learned to adapt and uses his hearing to his advantage in combat.

Superfly said that sketch which I now know to be Quil was put up maybe a month or two before I got here. I don't even know which thread it has been posted in or even if it had been posted. The similarities are uncanny.

Had to dig for this thread, this was dead and buried... don't you think it's great reviving the fallen threads. Well since I haven't posted art in a long time I guess I should. Well here are some I done recently...

This was for fun I decided to do a kind of chibi style sketch of my character Ace...

The second is pretty similar but in a more aggressive pose...

The third is my second attempt at a CG.. I also done the lineart and this is one of my first attempt at an anime drawing. I call it Girl From Afar...

Any comments will be welcome, questions or some random pieces of text strung together...
