The character designer is the same man (his name escapes me at present), who did the designs for Outlaw Star. It's good to see that Haruhiko Mikimoto isn't involved since his designs seem to have gone to crap recently.

Some CG clips from the new series were shown at the Macross panel at Anime Expo recently. They were said to have featured an F-14 transforming to gerwalk. No video recording was allowed when these clips were being shown because this footage will be featured on the Japanese 20th Anniversery Macross DVD and they don't really want it spread all over the internet just yet.

    Chi! (Heheh, Chobits...)

AAAAANYway, is it me, or does the new fighter have a copilot? I've never seen that in a Macross/Robotech fighter that I can remember. Seeing the design, is it assumed that the new Macross will be primarily Earth-based?

OOOO...the artwork looks amazing. I dunno about anybody else here, but the characters (especially Mao, the girl in the corner) are reminscent of the style in BGC2040. If they look like Outlaw Star...I'm sorry, I haven't watched it yet....:( Mao looks like Nene Romanova...with black hair and tanner skin...

The majority of Valkyries have the capacity to seat a co-pilot or passenger, remember Yang in Isamu's YF-19?
The only exception I can think of is the YF-21 due to the brain wave control system there was no space at all behind the pilot.

Yes this new series is likely to be primarly earth based.
The story is set in the early days before the original TV show.
It centres around the development of the 1st variable fighters by the UN Spacy.

A large amount of the story is said to take place in Africa and Kawamori says the feeling will be similar to his recent work Arjuna.
Rumours suggest that characters including Roy Focker and probably Claudia will appear because Roy was involved with the development of the original VF's

Yoko Kanno will not be doing the music as they want to use music that will fit in with the African setting.

Hmmm, must have slipped my mind. I usually only see pilots. Or can it be that they just don't usually have them?

Be handy if I told you goes about the format this series will be in.
They plan to make it a 4 part OVA with a running time of 30 minutes for each episode.

I had been hoping for 45 minute episodes like Plus but at least it wont be a low quality TV series.

It should be fansubbed very soon after it's release as I've heard of quite a number of people interested in doing it.

Just found out that VF Zero is gonna be a 6 part OVA, not 4 part as previously believed.

Well after seeing the trailer.. I have to say im disapointed that they are using CGI for the fighter parts.. Maybe it will look realy good.. but i hate when they mix them like that in an anime and you have an extreemly noticable difference in the art..

I'm disapointed they're doing the valks in CG too, Macross Plus's battles were absolutely fantastic in standard cel animation.
The public expects CG in nearly every anime these days though.

Agreed. I cant stand it when they splice CGI sequences with traditional animation.

The only original Valkyrie that had room for two was the Trainer model (one seat for the instructor, one for pupil). Why Yang put a second seat into the 19, I have no idea at all, since it is not standard. The only other times I can recall two people in a Valkyrie are...

Misa and Hikaru. Misa sat on Hikaru's lap. (Macross tv series)
Minmay and Hikaru. They were in a trainer (Macross DYRL)
Sylvie and Hibiki. Hibiki sat in what is essentially a storage space, not a real seat (Macross 2).

Actually, now that I get to thinking, it doesnt make much sense for Yang to have included that second seat... maybe as it was a prototype he could guide pilots through its operations at first? But then, he had the simulator... Hmm. Ah well.
