Hmm... Well, 'brb' I think is fairly valid. Overused, yes, but convenient when you have to run to the phone before the person hangs up or something like that. Same with 'g2g' - though I hate people who use that to end an email or something. I won't tolerate chatspeak outside an actual chatroom or instant message conversation - if you're writing out a longer message, you can damn well take the time to write complete words. XD

The acronym that bothers me the most is 'asl.' It stands for age/sex/location - and people have no business asking me that in abbreviated form anyway. If they want to know, they can actually include it in the conversation and ask about me, rather than hitting me with three letters and expecting a response, as if I want to classify myself through stats. e_e; I once had someone do that - I got a message that just said 'asl' (no "Hello, I'm so-and-so" or anything). I said I thought that was rude, and asked why they needed to know anyway - and she said "oh, u might b 2 old 2 talk 2" or something like that. -_-; Right, like I couldn't just lie and say I was 14 or something. I guess it just goes along with my feeling that internet anonymity should be another way to break down the lines dividing gender, ethnic groups, and age groups. *shrug*

I've never seen ATM, IAF or ATF used in this context before ... maybe I'm just lucky. Every time I see ATM I think "automatic teller machine", and I try to remember when those became ABM's instead.
lol is easily the most overused on the list. When I want to indicate laughter, I actually type the syllables. This way I can give different types, be it a haughty guffaw, a jovial chortle, a maniacal cackle or vile derision, or anything else, for that matter. It's more original that way.

I remember when I first used the internet everyone would say "lol" and I was like "umm, what the hell is that??" I think it is annoying because new acronyms are created every day and I can't keep up and just get confused...

or to translate for those who love these things:

STFU I despise. I mean if you're going to insult somebody put some effort into it.

:anime: I agree. My sister uses all these acronyms all the time and I have absolutely no idea what the heck she's talking about. Back in my day ( :sweat2: she's only a year younger than me), if you wanted to say "be right back", you wrote it out. I mean, I know how time consuming these things are, heck, "be right back" was all, what, 15 keystrokes? (including the quotation marks) and took me about a total of 3 seconds.

    your hillarious.

All of these abbreviations are read subconsiously by me, I don't even realize that they are abreviations. when someone says "lol" it means "wow, they think i'm funny", or "brb", it means "there going for a second, they will be back"

you've got to wonder what kind of ******* said "laugh out loud" so much he had to abbreviate it.
