    I never really got it... what's penpen's role in the story??? other than the fact that he's adorbly cute, and fun to have around...

    He is the cute mascot of the show. So many shows have something like that. For example gundam has haro he/it serves no purpose but he still is in the show. Trigun has Koro Neco who only serves as a comedic piece but he is still in the show.

    Besides everyone loves Pen Pen

    well if you think about it
    Pen² is with Misato, after she got over the whole 2nd impact bit, they probaly gave him ot get as a pet to help her mental recovery, I mean she WAS a mute for 2 years so it wouldn't come as much of a suprise
