dont people with horrendiously poor grammar irritate you? not like online, thats acceptable, because you dont have to hear them. but in real life. i know a girl who, instead of using are, as in "what are you doing?" or "where are you going?" she takes the are out, and puts in is. so she says "what is you doing?''. things like that. so, if those people irritate you tell me why.

Actually internet slang in forum boards annoy me off *just* as much as people talking in an ungrammatical fashion. I mean, in chatrooms, it's fine. Honestly, I'm usually fine with it, as long as you can tell they're asking a question. But, some people there days, they don't even use a smidgen of punctuation. At all, none, NOTHING. It's like, they're trying to *make* it hard to read for us.

The worst part is when people say that, "Oh, I type this way because it's comfortable". I'm sorry, but honestly, if you're part of the group, you have to try and think beyond yourself and work towards lifting the GROUP up, too. Typing like this with no punctuation and seeming lack of attention to general rules makes it so hard to understand what someone is actually trying to say right. Heh, bet you didn't even know that I was asking a freaking question there. *sigh*

Then again, I'm rather tolerant of speech only because all of us know that there are some idiosyncracies depending on where you came from. I was once a full idiosyncratic-idiot (hehe) myself, so I can be patient about it. It annoys me, but I know what it feels like to say stuff in stuff *I* can understand, but no one else does.

    I'm mainly a stickler for writing/typing things. I tend to point out spelling mistakes or incorrect punctuation use, my intentions depending upon the situation. Usually I'm just trying to point out to someone a mistake that they'll have corrected for future reference. But for "ppl hoo talk lik this" in chat rooms and such, I do it just to be an ***. Also, I'm still looking for someone else who uses a semi-colon in casual chat conversatin. o_O;

I hate bad grammar and spelling, on and offline. If you can't be bothered to use english correctly, you shouldn't be using it at all. :p

Some people dont know the correct way of speaking, b/c they probably havent been to school. wait wait .. well they went to a certain degree or they have poor examples. So some people cant help it, or it is accepted where ever they live. Some people cant be arsed to correct whatever they say, (not great ettiqute) but are maybe they type it and it sounds right in their head and it comes out wrong :)
but yes it can be annoying but what isnt? :)

I can understand internet curtails, especially in chatrooms, but bad grammar in real life pisses me off. A lot.

It really depends on the situation in my case. I understand that people from different parts speak differently, not to mention some people just don't get the rules, and yet others are just too lazy to remember them.

I do get rather annoyed in posts where there isn't any punctuation at all. I can understand spelling mistakes because (a) we all typo at times (b) we have all been at a loss of how to spell something at one point or antoher and sometimes we don't have time to try and get the proper spelling. There are other reasons as well, but I'm not going to mention them up this time.

Personally, I think that I am a horrific speller. Thank goodness I have spell check. Even though I am a bad speller, I get the mechanics of English pretty good, but if you asked me to point out a prepostion I would be at a loss of what you meant. Heck, I just figured out the difference between a noun and a verb last year and I'm in the 10th grade! Now that's pretty sad, especially for an AP student, but we all have our quirks.

What irks me though is some people purposedly will just be too lazy to put something really simple. I understand in chats using shortcuts. Even I do them, but more often then not I end up typing out full words.

There is more I would like to write on this, but it's 11 pm and that means I will be getting up in 5 1/2 hours. Good night and I hope that I get my point across a bit.

Yeah, lazy people are the worst. Some people don't even take the time to look at the screen when they type! Do you ever see someone post one sentence, and it looks like the person was simply jamming away at the keys without thinking/looking?

"sup so were meeting allrite tomrorw yeepers ok"
"ehrie we i good pic nutsess ye"

Learning the proper way puts you on the road to souping up yourself. It's mastery of something. I feel that poetry and prose are (well, SHOULD be) mastery of language/literature as an art form. Debate, persuasion, etc. can also show mastery of language, but in a technical form (and the real "elite" way of speaking). I found that lots of people who don't take the time to write properly are pretty stupid--and don't even realize whether or not they're losing a flame battle (sometimes they turn out to be lil kids, anyway).

As for in real life speaking, you should all come over to Hawaii and listen to our pidgin English. I think it's only when you're in a cultural atmosphere where you can let it all loose, cuz the way of speaking is part of the culture.

But it is difficult at times to debate and argue on a forum because the person you are arguing with will post a reply when ever they feel like it. It could be in a minute, an hour or the next day. By that time, opinions could change, you might have forgotten your main points, or you might just not really care about the debate any more.

Speaking of bad grammer, one of my classmates who has family in Mississippi (the state) said that they speak backwards....literally! Take for instance this sentance "cut the grass." I ran this by him and he said they say it this way, "grass the cut." I seriously doubt that anybody talks like this, but then again I just can't help but think that some people might. Has anyone ever heard of this...(how do I say it).... grammatical screw up? Now don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that this is true or anything. I just want to find out, that's all.

To me, mistakes on purpose like replacing "you" with "u" or such stuff like Kame did is fine. They can be understood easily and fit in with the rest of the sentance. I do hate having to decipher things that people say when they decide to turn paragraphs into puzzles. Not only is it irritating, but what the person ends up trying to say is almost always meaningless.

I've basically given up on trying to correct people's spelling/grammar/language mistakes. They are far too rampant for anyone's good, not that I still don't nearly die of serious internal injury from the twitching convulsions into which I enter when I see or hear blatant errors. *NB: "blatant" for me includes "There's 10 minutes left" and the like*

Dam linguists and their elitism. I suck at spelling and grammer. I do try, for example I am currently trying not to spell anything wrong in this here post, to do it right but I am far from perfect. People who correct me mid sentence drive me nuts!

Its like saying, "You may have somthing really insightfull to say but I don't give a crap what you are trying to convey if you dont do it conforming to the anal retentive incomprehensible and totaly inconsistant "rules" of the English language."

Grammer rules crack me up. When you think about it, there not based on any real concept or absolute. Grammer rules can be, and often are, changed without the fabric of the universe ripping apart. All a change in grammer rules means is that some poor 5th grader has to do another grammer worksheet. If you try to change the fundamental rules of Mathmatics your space ship hits an asteriod and your nice and dead.

English is about conveying a message or meaning. If this is accomplished than the mission is accomplished.

The next time your English teacher gets all high and mighty explain to her that language is just a glorification of caveman grunts.

Ugh grr ublg rak berr ugh!

    heh yes..i agree. *^-^*

i don't like it, but i can't condone it. i'm very sure i do it all teh time when i type anyways. i try to fix as much as i can, but alas. I'm much to lazy to capitalize. that shift button is just to far out of normal finger reach. i have a half *** way of pecking/proper typing anyways.
scary thing, but i'm normally better in chatrooms than in forums...

and yet, somehow, you find the strength in that deep, black heart of yours, to love some of us heathens anyways. *^-^*

yes...punctuation! gods damnit, it isn't that hard to put a period or a comma in a sentance. or, to not type in all caps...i can survive without the apostraphe, but please, do the world a favor: use a period.

I understand exactly what ya'll are trying to say. I will have to agree with you. Although I got the basics down, I really don't think it is essential to be perfect because lets face it, no one is.

Sometimes little things irk me, but that is where I just need to get over it because not everyone is like I am. I can handle no capitilization (although I don't like doing that unless I'm in a chat and still I seem attactched to that shift key at the beginning of a sentence).
