Found this linked off of Megatokyo, and visited it recently. Sounds like a very novel idea, and am going to give it a go as soon as I have the chance.

It's specifically catered towards anime/manga/game fans who have interest in learning the language.

The idea: Learning Japanese by playing an RPG.

Anyone had a gander at this, or played through the game up to the current serial?

I've seen this, it's an interesting concept, you learn recognition of katakana at the beginning, I can't say much more about the game as I lost interest about there.

its an interesting Idea...but whats most important about any language is not reading it rather hearing it...to hear a language spoken brings a whole new level of understanding...i mean my friend speaks fluent greek and to see it written and hear it spoken are two completely different things...as for me...what helped me in my pursuit to learn the language was anime...watching it brought a great deal of learning which is why im at the level that im at currently...

Indeed. From my visit a while back to the site, however, it appeared the designer was gearing to add voice audio in future builds.

ah. well thats not a bad idea then...although i think hearing an actual japanese person ie. someone who was brought up speaking the language is much better then speaking with other people who are learning...over the past few yearsv ive found that when speaking with someone whos been speaking japanese all there life is much different than someone whos just learned...the speed of the speech is much faster...as well as small things such as pronuciations and other small details like that can greatly differ from someone who is not a japanese native...so....

Again, it seemed he was looking for a native speaker to do that part. :)

In any case, I found LRNJ more frustrating than fun, so I'm shelving it from my interests for now...

Well, the game isn't really fun. Besides, learning all that kana is frustrating.

The base idea was great, but the execution just doesn't follow through too well. It quickly becomes a game of memory, and while it may do something for someone already learning kana, for the completely clueless it doesn't accomplish much.

ah....does it immediatly launch you into reading kana or does it give you an overveiw of the whole writing system?

Well i dont know what the fuss is about with this. Ive played slime forest quite abit and i started from scratch. So know the meanings of a character all you have to do is simply not answer and the answer is revealed to you. and it is alot better than just being handed a sheet of paper with all the chars on. this way you beat it into your brain. Firstly into your short term memory (so if you dont keep at this over a period of time you will start to forget it all) then into the long term memory. n as for hearing the pronounciation of the words then i have one word for you: Anime. thats all you need. In most anime intros they have karaoke which is often written with the english translation and the japanese original in japanese characters. It is a perfect way to train up your abilities after youve learned what the characters mean. n as for myself i learned to get a basic understanding from listening to japanese first before i started using slime forest. n imo there should be no reason why you cant do it the other way around. Though i think i would probably have had an easier time understanding japanese if i actually knew how they write to begin with. Either way, so far Slime Forest is the best way out there that i have found if you want to get an understanding for the written japanese. Ofcourse theres no grammar and such but that you can find on any learn japanese tutorial.

If you havent tried Slime Forest then do, youll get an understanding for it in no time. Took me a couple of days of idle playing of the game to learn all hiragana, katakana and about 50 kanji characters. Which is far beyond what i would have with just a sheet of translations (which is the normal way of having to learn it)

Hope this spam has helped some of you in some way ;)

For those interested, I've created a game that's based on a similar concept. It's an RPG that helps you learn information regarding Hiragana, Katakana & Kanji. Also, there is a vocabulary option.

    It's available at http://www.tbns.net/knuckles/
