Frankly, I'm getting tired of hearing about "Final Fantasy this" and "Final Fantasy that". What about the other awesome RPG (series) out there? Just to point out some that a few people still know about, Breath Of Fire, Tales of ... (Phantasia, Eternia), Suikoden, Wild ARMs, Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre (though these were more tactical and strategic, but still considered RPGs), Star Ocean, Lufia, Saga (Romancing Saga, Saga Fronter, Unlimited Saga)? And to please those of you who are that anal about it, some of the "Action-Adventure RPGs". IE, Zelda *shudders at having to call it that*, Seiken Densetsu, Soul Blazer, Illusion Of Gaia, Terranigma. Am I the only person that thinks some of these games deserve are a hell of a lot better than Final Fantasy? Feel free to throw in your thoughts and any others I forgot.

    Still a Squaresoft/FF junkie, I am. :)

As far as non-FF games, Chrono Trigger/Cross are excellent games. CC is currently one of my favorite games, mostly because it's got a lot of replay value. Vagrant Story was good too, though more of an action game.

And you don't have to stick with consoles when naming these off. Don't forget the great games and series' on PC as well. The releases on the PC platform tend to be closer to PnP gaming than their console comrades.

Baldur's Gate, Elder Scrolls, Ultima, Might & Magic to name the more known ones.

I do like teh FF games, but they honestly do get way too much credit... I played FF7 expecting it to live up to teh title of "Best RPG ever"... it fell quite short of that, though I did like the FFs. ^^

Another game favorite of mine is Skies Of Arcadia. An AWESOME RPG that really really deserves alot more credit than it got... it's graphics were a bit outdated, but it's storyline kicked ***. ^^

Been wanting to try Skies after hearing good things about it, but never owned a Dreamcast, go figure. Grandia II was luckily enough ported to PC, so I could continue what I started with my PSX version of the first...

Neverwinter Nights is my current favorite pasttime, since I can jump on hundreds of servers and find places to explore.

An old favorite yet to receive mention is the Shining Force series. Maybe more fitting in the Tactical genre, but still notable to me. :)

I like Final Fantasy games a lot, but they should not take spotlight from other RPGs. I have not played many non-Final Fantasy RPGs but RPGs like Wild ARMs, Zelda and Breath of Fire should be given more attention.

The FF games are among my favourite games ever. Every single one of them I enjoyed immensely. I think they deserve a lot of credit, I'm sure they opened the doors of RPGdom to many people. But do they get too much credit? Maybe, among n00bs. I think more veteran RPG players, assuming they even like the FF games, they can recognise that although the games are good, there are many other good RPGs out there. I myself like a very wide variety from Baldur's Gate, to Breath of Fire, to Vagrant Story, to Deus Ex, and plenty in between. I must say however that FFVII is my favourite game ever, and some of the others are not far behind.

You take the words out of my mouth, DrunkLeprachaun. I think you knew me in a past life or something.

I think Vagrant Story isn't appreciated as much as it could be. I've read reviews where people complain that "all it is is dungeon crawling with Parasite Eve's aiming system and box puzzles". It always sticks out in my mind because it has one of the best translations ever -- kudos to the guy who decided to use Ye Olde English in the game! It adds so much to the depth and mood. Not to mention the customization! I think a lot of people don't like VS because it seems so complicated, but I liked it because of how it gave the player complete freedom over their inventory and encouraged them to be creative.

Final Fantasy VII is still my absolute favorite, no matter how many times I play it. The only thing I can say for an explanation is that it has... a mood. I don't know what it is. But at times the game just gave me this incredible "wow" feeling, an overwhelming feeling of the sheer awesomeness of everything going on with the story. No other game has done that to me quite so well.

I haven't really heard much about the Shining Force series, but I do love Neverwinter Nights! Though it's more of a MMORPG.

Actually, if it weren't for Skies Of Arcadia, I wouldn't have played the FF series. :p Skies of Arcadia Legends was origionally scheduled to come out on teh PS2, so I went out and bought one... then they decided to change it to Gamecube (grrr... all my allowance gone! ;_;), so I was like, hey, migth as well play the FF series. ^_^

Might I add, this Final Fantasy flash is hilarious:

Worth checking out, unless you're scared of 16-bit. It was one of the few RPG gems that the Sega Genesis managed to get. Also made it onto a few other Sega platforms. Even if you have to go the emulation route to try out a ROM of Shining Force or Shining Force 2, I say go for it. Strategic style fantasy with anime-style characters, monsters and magic.

We're not ripping square. In fact, many of the games listed here are Squaresoft and Enix (the two merged now). The simple fact is that almost any RPG player knows the Final Fantasy line of games. It's almost a household term, now.

And the shame is, that can leave other great games in its trail that many gamers won't experience - passing it up for the next FF.

Two more awesome series I forgot to throw out earlier:
    -Quest for Glory
    -Lunar

There was another good game I played before, but it's more Strategy, like Tactics and such. Bahamut Lagoon. That was a pretty cool game. Currently, I took a break from Unlimited Saga to play Arc The Lad: Twilight Of The Spirits, which is turning out to be pretty good. See? So many better than your "Final Fantasy". :p

Final fantasy has gone to **** lately. But maybe thats just me.

To be honest, the only FF I really like was 7. So many games were so much better than the other FF's. Like Wild ARMs one and two, Alundra, the Shining Force's, Phantasy Stars, and Dragon Warriors. Wow, thats old school right there!

Is it just me or did Final Fantasy X not feel like a Final Fantasy? Just something about it made it so radically different that I couldn't think of it as an FF series... it was sort of upsetting, regardless of how much I liked/disliked the game (which really isn't important on this thread anyway).

Anyway, I love FF but I agree that there are other RPGs out there worthy of being played and loved. ^^ Chrono Cross is one of them, methinks. I agree completely that it has a lot of replay value, if only to see the several endings that can be unlocked in new game+ mode. Chrono Trigger I don't doubt as being good but I never managed to finish it so I can't speak for it myself...

And Xenosaga Episode I is another biggie.
