the main difference is manga is a comic, and anime is the cartoon.
also, a manga version of the anime is usually realesed before.
    and manga is usually uncut.
    yeah

    the other dosnt.

Well, aside from the obvious which have already been mentioned (anime is colored, has voices, and moves), a difference in art really depends.

Very rarely if ever are the manga-ka the ones who create the character designs for the anime. Yes, the character designs will be based of the manga characters, but they generally won't be exactly the same. Sometimes the character designs between manga and anime will be radically different from each other.

Also, character designs/art quality within the anime can fluctuate depending on who drew the images for the episode(s).

    Here are some examples:

Flame of Recca: While the character designs are more or less the same, the manga versions are younger looking than their anime counterparts.

Weiss Kreuz: There are some hair color changes and the style is slightly different between the manga and the first anime series. The second anime series (in current Japanese release), has completely different character designs.

Escaflowne: This is probably the prime example I can come up with currently. The anime came first, and has one art style. There are two versions of the manga, and one has an art style similar to the series, while the other makes radical changes to the characters. And then you have the movie, where the characters undergo various states of transformation to get from their series selves to their movie selves.

Violinist of Hameln comes to mind as well, though more with the actual personalities than with the art. The art seems somewhat different between the two, but also, the manga (and movie) is much whackier and a lot less serious than the anime series.

Evangelion is another example. Anime Shinji is a TOTAL wimp. I mean TOTAL. He's a crybaby, and all that. Manga Shinji is a sort of a flirt, more angry. Oh, and things happened differently. He meets Asuka in an arcade, instead of at the Sea Battle.

Love Hina is another. The anime is the shortened and condensed version of the manga. What happens in Love Hina Again is actually spread out over 1 and a half volumes or so in the manga. So there's lots of middle, not covered. The art is much better in the manga too. Flowy, compared to the chubby anime faces. Well, they are!!! Especially in Again!

In any case, choosing manga over anime is really a matter of choice. I like LH manga over the anime, yet I *definitely* prefer Initial D's anime over its manga. Art is *usually* better because it isn't animated. There's no main cell and fill cells to cover movement, where the drawing is actually VERY rudimentary. It's just ONE picture. Nothing more than that, and nothing less that that. Oh, and one thing I like about a lot of manga...if the reader is almost guaranteed to not understand something (like entrace requirements to Today, for example) they either explain in a few boxes, or have footnotes...especially in Tokyopop manga. :D

Yea, sometimes the anime can be a way different art style than the manga. Usually the manga is better. Some anime's they change plot lines and somethimes then can change the characteristics of them, and there's always the cutting and butchering done by the americans so that it's too horrible to look at. the voices of the characters in america aren't into the anime so they sound as if they are reading from a script...even though they are. in Japan, the voice acters get into the anime. they sound as if they themselves are the characters and act that way naturally and in japan the voices go with characters while in america...they stink at picking out voice acters! It's rare when you hear an anime character with an american voice that suits them. you can usually tell when someones into their role or just reading from a script. so unless you like listening to horrible american voices, butchered and cut american style, then watch it like that but it's usually better to get the dvd where you can choose whch language you want to pick. japanese better. don't have a dvd player? time to get one.

Big O is an interestng case too...

The anime came first, didn't do too hot (eventhough it was freeking awsome) and so the show was cancelled after 13 episodes. It generated a huge fan following after it had been taken off the air and so the arist who did RockMan was hired to do the Big O manga.

In the first episode of the anime, Roger Smith (main character) meets up with his love interest/side kick R. Dorothy Waynewright. However in the manga this doesn't happen until issue 5. So the fans were able to see how Roger was before R. Dorothy came along, it was a nice touch. Apparently the manga also continues on past where the anime stopped though since I only have the first few issues I don't know for certain this is true.

As for art differences I've noticed that manga seems more fluid while anime, since it is animation, must have more defined lines and borders. And excellent example of this is Sailor Moon. In the manga the characters are often not even fully drawn, giving it a more artistic look. The anime is radically different, looking like plain old animation. I find the manga to be a much more beautiful representation of the characters.

Here's an example of what I mean:

I used to be obcessed with Sailor Moon - all 18 manga volumes, 8 of the novels, two plushies, a t-shirt, 3 action figures, 3 necklaces, a ring, 2 tatoos, 2 sets of trading cards -incomplete, stickers, a lot of dolls....probably more. that obssesed. now i have other things such as different volumes of manga i have 55 all together so far and am getting four more this weekend after i pay for the broken graduated cylinder. anyway, the manga tends to be better than anime although some anime have been better than the manga such as Saint Tail. At least i thought. so yea, the manga always tends to better. and gundam wing. the manga art wasn't all that great, at least i thought. i loved the anime though. which brings me to say that most animes now actually have voices that almost suits them, like Rain in G Gundam, and Doman. sailor moons voice was just annoying but in Japanese it was almost the same...no...actually wasn't. English def. more annoying. the voices for kenshin, which airs march 17, are horrible. at least from what i've seen. the japanese voices are so much better!
