OK, I've looked around and haven't found a thread on this yet. I recently watched this show in my anime club, and thought that it was really good. Albeit I've seen one episode, the animation quality was good, as was the plot. And a few of my friends told me it was good, so yeah. Anyone else watch this? The new series(I think it's called R.O.D. The TV or something) is out Japan, but not yet in the States...

Well, I saw one episode, and all I know is that the main character(nicknamed "The Paper", because she has the odd ability to control paper, and stop bullets with it and the like) found this book, that is number one(or is it two?) in a series of two books, and there's something special about them, and she got attacked by stuff that wanted the book. And the name is what it is because when she is reading, she ignores everything else, and it is quite overtly pointed out when an enemy says "Die" when she's trying to get the book back and well, she's going to read or die.

R.O.D. the TV is actually entitled Read or Dream. The acronym is the same, but the title is different. ^_^

I love R.O.D., with thanks to the Eirtaku for suggesting it, as it's always enjoyable to watch. Read or Die's main character, Yomiko Readman (A.K.A. the Paper) is a subordinate of an underground English group that tracks down books that can endanger lives. She's a book addict who buys book with whatever salary she gets as a teacher and a secret agent. The OVA is severely short, as the original manga is MUCH longer. But, it also stars Nancy "Miss Deep" Makuhari, who is pretty much a mirror of Kitty "Shadow Cat" Pryde of the X-Men.

The manga is, as said, much longer. Too bad it *SUPPOSEDLY* starts off so slow.

ANYWAY, Read or Dream TV is actually centered around four people. Nenene was an admirer of Yomiko's during the Paper's teaching career. Nenene (for those with hiragana knowledge, this name should be a little amusing. ^_^) was privy to Yomiko's alter-life as the Paper. Nenene becomes a pretty famous author, who sadly meets a writer's block as Yomiko disappears four years ago. She meets up with Anita, Maggy, and Michelle in a signing trip in China. These three are actually called the Paper Sisters, who exhibit powers very similar to that of Yomiko. After a while though, it apparently becomes more like the manga...where the Paper Sisters Detective Agency gets the spotlight and have adventures.

Tasty Tidbit: Yomiko "The Paper" Readman owns a whole apartment complex. However, she's her only tenant. The rest of the place is filled with books she's collected!

(Whoa, that felt like those little trivia facts you find on those Marvel Trading Cards from back in the day...)

    Izzy, R.O.D. fan. ^_^

I fell in love with R.O.D. ova the first time I saw it way back when and I'm so happy the OVA dvd was such a good price!
plus the tv series is full of action, great animation and story. and funny too. and about all the books and apartment.. her rare supply teaching jobs wouldn't pay much. and it's very funny she got a maternity leave opportunity (so the school board must have known about her?) anyways.. she must get paid quite a lot for her 'The Paper' work. but then I felt she wasn't very active in that work or her teaching.. maybe she inherited some money as well? but she was tight on cash. what an anime mystery!

Paper has fascinated me ever since this animation. mayhaps this animation started from a fascination with origami as well?

I bought Read or Die on dvd. There was only three episodes and i'm wondering if this is the ova?

Anyway i love this show. Even if i have only seen three episodes. The animation was so clean and smooth. And i thought that the characters were really funny. Espessally Drake. I loved the way Yamiko is always so polite and trys to ask for her book back even though somebody is trying to kill her.

If there is more of this anime out there please let me know were to get it cause i thought that this was one of the best animes i've seen in a long while.

The DVD by Manga Entertainment is Read or Die, the OVA.

As I said, the TV show is called Read or Dream. And is not licensed nor released in North America.

Both "shows" have previously come out with manga iterations.

I really, REALLY love the animation of both shows. They're fluid, without being TOO human...while the paper users have this...cool paper fluttering effect everytime they use paper. Maggie's paper monsters look bad-***, too!

    Especially the big bird one.

Well, today, the ROD TV is out.

And, it comes...in a book! ROFL. It's actually a very nice book-type thing, with folding out "pages" for the DVDs. A little thinner than a standard sized bible, it's also got the fake leather treatment.

It also comes with (which is actually very common nowadays) a two-sided colorboard/pencil board of two of the ROD characters. Pretty 'lux, I'd say.

Oh, the BEST thing about it?

    5.1 JAPANESE TRACK!!! w00t!!! FINALLY!

Don't know HOW many anime series there are where the japanese dub track fans are assed out because only the english dub gets the nice dolby effects.

Here we go...added some pictures, so you could see what I'm talking about.

I finally watched the whole Read or Dream series. It's really good and we get to see a lot of Paper action. Had a good ending too. I'll wait for the box dvd set to come out even if I have to wait a long time.
I'm happy I got to see some Nancy action again!

I have a question though for those who've seen it all
Umm.. some dog appeared in the bushes and Joker finally woke up and disappeared. Did I miss something there? and was it only me who thought bringing a being back into the world who would do God knows what to everyone's minds and run amock just for world peace(which may not have even come about) was a tad insane?

You could see that in different ways. Remember when Junior-kun got "sucked in" by that green stuff during the last episode? He put his hand on Jokers head and said " Now you will explore it too " and than he turned all grey? I believe that he got a glimpse of the pain he was causing, and he came to a sense afterwards...But hey, it's only my two cents
