    if u take a look at kenshins past aka the Bakumatsu you'll find that many of the characters in Kenshin are real. Kenshin is not real but he was paterned after Hitokiri Kawakami Gensai. Gensai was a dangerous man that was often mistaken for a women at first glance and while he look innocent he was a cold calculating man and is well know for his mid day slaying of Kuma Souzan with his lightning fast Furanui style of Kenjutsu. He was said to be the greatest of the Four great HItokiri of the Bakumatsu. Kaoru is totally fictional ^^;;; Sanosuke is paterned after Harada Sanosuke one of the captians of the 5th Shinsengumi Unit. Sano's entire character is based on him. its said that Harada loved a brawl and was usually at the base of it. he fought with a spear or a Yari. kinda like sano's Zanbatou neh? The Hiruma brothers are fictional as well Magumi Dr. Gensai Tsubame Tae are all fictional the police chief is fictional as well. Kawaji is a real police captian and was the one that brought Saitou into the police force. Yamagata Aritoumo is real as well. Okita Soushi also know as Okita Soujirou is real. Katsura Kogorou is real as well as the Kiehetai and Takasugi Shinsaku are real as well. Saitou is real although he look really weird ^^;;; he was a heavy drinker and died of a stomache ulcer at the ripe old age of 75 he lived a long life beginning with his life in the Shinsengumi and the 3rd Captain. from there he was sperated from the Shinsengumi and the battle of Toba Fushimi. he joined the police force as Lt. Fujita Gorou. after he left the police force he worked as a sequirty guard. his grandson has a webpage up about him but i think its all in japanese. OKita Soushi once known as Okita Soujirou (hmmmmmm Soujirou has a long lost granfather j/k) was a prodigy at the sword and entered the Tennen Rishin Ryuu Dojo under Kondo at age 9. he was an accomplished swordsman by the time the bakumatsu came he was equally as good handaling a bokken shinken or shinai. however in the middle of the bakumatsu happenings he got teburculosis (btw he was a real live bish and incredibally popular with the ladies^^;;) which back then was untreatable. during the raid on the Ikedaya House he collapsed coughing up a shocking amount of blood. after the Shinsengumi broke up he was sent to a Teurculosis Hospital in Edo he died there at the age of 25. Kanryuu was parterned after Takeda Kanryuusai a gay bully. he bullied thos under him and sucked up to those above him all in all he was just as bad as the kanryuu in Kenshin. But, Kondo found out that he was betraying the Shinsengumi to the Inshin Shishi he told him that it was alright to go and sent Saitou to escort him to the Ishin meeting house. on the bridge seperating the two halves of Kyoto,as ordered Saitou assasinated him with his most powerful move the Left Handed Forawrd Thrust (*not* Gatotsu) which was a break off of the the Tennen Rishin Ryuu Special Technique Hiratsuki which is a move where the katana is held tip forward edge facing away and thrust forward. anyway yeah that was a long post... ^^x;;;;;

    Seems like it should be though. I mean, it's ancient Japan and all that. It's interesting to learn that they were actually real people at one time. Err, well, not the cartoons, the...well. THE CARTOONS ARE BASED ON REAL PPL. That's what I mean!! :D The stories actually happened, and history is once again being portrayed beautifully through an anime worthy of its tales.

    Okay, I'm good. ^^;

    "Character model of Himura Kenshin, Kawakami was of the Shiranui Ryuu (he invented it himself)Hmm. Seems that his Battoujutsu pose is quite unique: something like Kenshin's, "the right leg is extended in front, knee slightly flexed, while the left leg is folded with the knee touching the ground. One slash with the right hand, and that's it." (Do I see all the people starting to imitate the pose? Ok I admit it, I tried it too. Really hard on my legs...)

    According to documents, Kawakami was a man of short stature, kept his hair long, quiet, and was often mistaken for a female. In fact, something like Kenshin.

    Kawakami was a supporter of the Jyoi movement, his most famous killing being that of Sakuma Shouzan, the great thinker who was the teacher of Yoshida Shoin, who in turn was the teacher of Kido Koin (Katsura Kogorou) and other Choshu shishis. Sakuma believed that in order to protect herself from foreign threat, it was essential for Japan to open up her self to Western influences and learn about all the technologies the West had to offer, so that Japan would have to ability to fight back against colonialism. Needless to say, this made him a target for radicals who believed that Japan musn't be contaminated by filthy gaijins. Kawakami was arrested after the assassination, and was thrown into jail. He was freed after the Restoration. However, the new Meiji government, comprising of young political blood, believed in Sakuma's views and was practising the concept of 'Western Technologies, Japanese Soul'. Kawakami disagreed strongly against this, for according to Watsuki, he didn't want to see the efforts of his comrades in the Jyoi movement who had since passed away, and also those who had died under his katana, to go to waste. In fact, it was based on this spirit that the character of Himura Kenshin is designed. In the end, he became such a nuisance to the Meiji government, that he was decapitated in the 4th year of Meiji, 1871."

    heyhey!

    hey all actually im the one that started this thread but unfortunetly my account froze up with no explination so heres my new account name! ^^ anyway yeah Hitokiri Gensai was incredibaly fast. Nowhere near Kenshins speed but then again who is? ^^;;; anyway his Battou Jutsu (Iai jutsu) style is increibily hard to do ^^;;; from that position with the normal battou jutsu style is hard. from that position my katana almost scrapes the ground not to mention when doing the battoujutsu the saya(scabbard) has to be pulled back while the katana is being pulled forward to prevent the sword from messing up the inside of the saya.

    also Hitokiri Gensai also look a lot like Kenshin according to the records found. he had long hair kept as i imagine in a ponytail due to the fact that hair in your eyes in a sword fight really really sucks ^^;;;; and was often mistaken for a woman. but he was totally the opposite a cold calculating man with a deadly swing.

    Whoa, you didn't knew about Saitou's real exsistence (sp)?

    You should have seen his portrait, it's...
    not quite appealing...
    And NO! He DOESN'T look the same as in the anime!!
    Sadly enough...
    (btw, for those curious, I'm one of the big Saitou fans out there!! I even LOOK like him, including the strings of hair, the katana and white gloves are on their way as well )
    ;)
