Video Games Review - Warsong 2

AKA Langrisser II, Der Langrisser (SNES version), and Langrisser Hikari II.

I suppose I should provide some info for those that haven't played it.

Well, it's a strategy game by Masayan, and also my favorite video game. Unfortunately it was never released in North America because it's prequel, Warsong 1, failed miserably.

On the plus side, that means we can play it with a decent translation and for free through the magic of emulation. All you need is a simple google search.

Anyway, it's got a very different style from typical strategy games. Shunning the real-time idea, this games takes it turn by turn, phase by phase, letting first you make your move, and then your opponents. Perfect for strategy. Also, rather than simply pitting your characters against monsters or other characters, as in games like Shining Force or Front Mission, you're given the opportunity to hire troops to fight for you. These range from simple soldiers, to horse- and pikemen, even Gryphon Riders!

Not only that, the game takes a very different view of the enemies, also, making them more human, more alive, than most villains in other video games. I won't give examples, as that would spoil the story. Anyway, the villains are just as human as your allies, having their own thoughts, their own dreams, feelings, vices... they're every bit as impressive and in-depth as anyone else. Even those who play a very small part in the story.

If you ever get the chance to play this game, I strongly suggest you do. (And if you see Der Langrisser, fully translated... let me know, ok? >.>)
