Hey, I'm a real anime freak and am looking for a good series.

(I can't rent so I buy all my anime which sometimes is not good *cough X: The Movie*)

I was thinking about Cowboy Bobop and Love Hina...Would these make a good collection? And I'm been thinking about Evangelion, but I'm not to sure about this one...Fighting robots don't really turn my crank? Is this all that's about? Or is there Drama in it dealing w/ people? What about Inu-Yasha?

I like action and dramatic anime. My fav's are Video Girl Ai, Oh My Goddess (all), X: One (the SERIES), Princess Mononoke

I've concluded that if the story of an anime isn't any good...then the anime isn't any good (*cough X: The Movie*)

But I'm talking about buying the whole set (if avaliable) so I'd like to know what's good for the $.

    -Thanks

I dunno, Love Hina's plot seems retarded and very fan-service like...but it's a great anime. Same thing with Evangelion, actually.

IMO, you can't go wrong with any of the three you choose. I'd go for something more along the lines of Love Hina myself. But, that's only because I'm in a sort of, love love anime mood lately.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the high quality of OMG. The movie, to put it bluntly, is frickin' awsome! I saw it and was hooked on the series immeadiatly. The manga is also quite good, I recomened it if you haven't already read it though Dark Horse did some screwy things with the continuity.

Cowboy Bebop. It has action and drama.Awesome series. For the most part the episodes have seperate stories,(good stories though)however there is a plot that carries across the series.

Evangelion's good too.If you dont like fighting robots than you may not like the series, but the series does have other stuff. There is a dramatic plot dealing with the characters, but it is linked to the mechs(not very much though). This series follows a main storyline for the most part.I should also say that most of the elements in this series dont just jump out at you. Most of the series requires you to think to find out what really happens in the series.

I don't think you can go wrong with Cowboy Bebop. I personally wouldn't recommend Love Hina, but if you like uber fanservice/cliche teen romance comedy about a guy with a bunch of young girls/lots of blushing girls, then it's for you. I would caution you about Eva . . . I personally think that should be a try before you buy type thing, since there are so many things to possibly love about Eva but on the other hand a lot of things to possibly hate (that, and it's an 8 DVD set). Check out some reviews and do some reading about it before you make the decision to buy it or not.

One series I HIGHLY recommend is Crest of the Stars. It's not that popular, but if you like science fiction that isn't all action but dialogue-oriented, it's definitely worth checking out. Oh, and it's only four dvd's long (13 ep. series).

    That's my two cents.

Crest of the Stars is AWESOME. I would mention it, but it's not done yet. I mean, "Crest" is...but not the other two books. I forgot the titles, but I do recall one of them being named "Banner of the Stars."

Once it's ALL out, then I'm going to buy all 12 DVD's, and get all three novels.

    It's just that good.

Thanks for the reminder of an awesome series, Odin.

Yeah, Banner of the Stars is the name of the second series. I don't know what the third series is called, but I really hope that it does comes out after the second one does (I was afraid that the second one wouldn't, and I was so happy when I found out!!!). Do you know where I can find english translations of the novels?

I also recommend Macross Plus and Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket if you like sci-fi anime (and each OVA's are only two dvds).

It seems like you're interested more into the fantasy genre . . . My Neighbor Totoro is coming out soon to the states (though the release is . . . meager), which is a Studio Ghibli film. It's a very charming movie.

Princess Nine is also a very fun shoujo/sports series.

Thanks for the recommendations so far...I'm leaning towards Cowboy Bebop...I watched an AMV that gave away the ending and now I want to watch the whole series. (I've seen a couple on the TOON network so I know I like them) The only real bad thing about it is I'm going to have to buy them all sepeartly because they've sold out of the Box sets already...That's what happens when you don't know about a good series and find out too late.:)

Also I'm going to check out Crest of the Stars. I don't think I've heard of this before so I'll thank you in advance for telling me about it. As always any more info or suggestion would be great!

Oh, and on a personal note if anyone here talks to anyone who produces anime dvd's could you please tell them to put in DIFFERENT Previews of upcoming or released anime. I'm tired of seeing the same ones again and again.:(

    Thanks...

Oh, God I'm bored! And I'm going to talk to myself and maybe you for awhile. I doubt anyone will find this here seeing it's mine.:) I didn't want to post it anywhere else cause I just didn't want to annoy anyone. Have I annoyed anyone yet?

How many people did it take to make this forum? (Again since I believe I'm talking to myself if I don't get an answer I won't feel to bad:). The source code looks a lot like designing a web page? I've been reading how to write HTML to create Web Pages...Anyway is creating a forum pretty much the same? How many people do you have monitoring it? Did you just do this for fun? Hehe, Oh, the questions...Do you make web pages for a living or program?

You know I haven't been on many Forums...Well I don't know really, as a matter of fact I accidentley came upon this one. Why I joined I don't know...I've used chat's (way back when) but it's hard to get into the conversation and then you get cussed at by a BIG shot or people try having sex...How degrating. :D

Well if any of the Creators (Admin.) or Watchers (Monerators) are reading this (like MY opinion counts?) I just wanted to tell you that you have a Great Forum here...It looks like you took a lot of time and dedication making it and keeping it clean. Does it use a lot of Bandwidth? Oh, i'm getting side tracked! I mean you go out of you way to make a place where people you don't even know (or might care not to know) can chat and you even make galleries for them and you don't ask anything in return other than keeping it clean and fun. Well again not that you'll see this but if you do I just want to Thank all of you for your hard work and dedication, when really you don't have to do any of it! Signed -The lost Thank You

Heh. Well, as you seem to have already chosen Cowboy Bebop I won't really try to sway you from it, but. . . .

I just didn't like it all that much. I mean, I like episodic stuff, and I like things with a continuous story/plot, but when you try to combine the two you can get . . . interesting results. Which is the case in Bebop, in my opinion. They could have handled it better.

I would personally recommend getting Fruits Basket if you haven't seen it. Another one to consider (once it finally is released state-side) is Saiyuki. Of course, I feel the need to plug both of these series because they are currently my favorites and don't seem like they'll be moving any time soon from that position.

There are also several series that are currently running in Japan, but they're only available as fansubs at the moment.

Try 'Ninja Scroll' and 'New Dominion Tank Police'. Dominion tank police I personally like but it may seem a little dated and a bit childish. You mite wanna read some reviews and see some pics before considering buying. It's funny in a way.

You should also try Saber Marionette J, it's a great series. If you looking for a tear jerker/anti-war try Grave of the Fireflies.

Like you, i am not really into giant robots, but i watched evangelion and it is now my fave anime.
The storyline is complicated and twisted. which is a good thing :D.

Coke - you totally rock, I can't believe I never mentioned Grave of the Fireflies!

Wings of Honneamise (also known as Royal Space Force) is also an excellent movie if you're looking for something serious.

And Blood_Phoenix - I don't think religion should really interfere with the enjoyment of Evangelion . . . I'm Roman Catholic and I enjoyed the series, and I have a friend who is Jewish and she liked it more than I did (and Evangelion borrows a LOT from Judaism).

Then again, less open-minded Christians probably would be offended by Eva's constant religious-window-dressing.

I recommend Love Hina, Gundam X, and the Tenchi Muyo OVA.. All three have good storylines and good animation. There is another series that so far seems well written is Magic Knight Rayearth, Though I can't say conclusively because i'm only partway through the first season..

The Slayers is an awesome series, and its got many popular voices, such as Ash and Brock from Pokemon (Well, at least they're experienced?) and is a lighthearted tail in a land of magic and monsters.

From the three episodes that I've seen, Serial Experiment Lain is good, too...its a solemn technological thriller based around a young girl and her computer.

Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust were excellent movies.

Also, check out the Recommended Viewing thread in Newbies for more choices :D

The new Japanese anime released this year in October 2002 called Gundam SEED. Not available in UK nor in US I don't think but you can download the first 10 episodes at www.animejunkies.com or alternatively just use p2p programs like Kazaa. It's very very good animation but the story is rather similar to the original Gundam which may disappoint some people.

Still good, recommended by me :)
