On Saturday, students from colleges, universities and technical institutes all across Canada participated in an event known as Shinerama, shining cars, shoes, bald heads ... whatever, to raise money for cystic fibrosis research.
I participated in this even myself, and it was great fun. My group of thirty or fourty people travelled off by bus to Cambridge to a Canadian Tire store, where we took up bottles of Windex and rolls of paper towels and began to shine the windows of cars for whatever donation the passers-by would give us. I don't think anyone actually shined any shoes or heads, but the cars were a big success.
In the afternoon we opened a car wash, and it was proven that sex sells, even in charity. The lack of much covering on some of the group members helped attract a lot of motorists. I'd normally be against this, but it was for a good cause, at least. One driver actually was driving at a high speed, saw one of our washers, and slammed on his breaks, creating a big squeal I could hear from the other side of the parking lot, and turned in to get a wash.
As for us gentlemen, we took to the store itself. We posted ourselves by the doors and, with the aid of a guitar, began to belt out song after song to attract further donations. Of course, only two of the eight or so of us who rotated shifts on the door could actually play, but we improvised anyway. I realized that I only know one chord any more ... kind of depressing. Our lyrics were all made up on the fly, usually involving the phrases "cystic fibrosis", and the best rhyme anyone could think of, "mystic hypnosis". It was pretty fun. I even sang a bit of soft background to my companions' vocals. I also did a bit of percussion, tapping on the bottom of a box of change creating a tambourine-like effect. Mostly, though, I just asked people politely if they would like to make a donation for cystic fibrosis research, and explained a few of the details of the disease.
I was on my feet for something like seven hours, without ever sitting down even once. This was kind of painful, and when I arrived home that evening, I was, needless to say, exhausted. Nevertheless, the event was a tremendous amount of fun.
I guess my point is that if you ever have the opportunity to participate in this or any similar fundraiser, do it. You won't regret it. We raised in total, after this and a week of similar charity events, a total of over 180 000 dollars in our school alone.
If you would like to discuss any charity work of your own, let's do it. This is the place.

That's pretty stupid. Kind of defeats the purpose in vollunteering.

So, was the fund a success? Got any figures on how much was earned?

Kind of disappointed that this wasn't the video game discussion thread I thought it was by the title, but I still found it to be a detailed experience worth responding to.

I don't know how much was raised overall, but our school's goal was $123456.78, so we blew that out of the water. This year set a new record for what we brought in, and Laurier's now raised over a million dollars total.

    Like eating potato chips ...

Next Thursday, there's a big event called "Take Back The Night" in which women walk against violence or something like that.
For the second year running, CH Little House (the building I live in) is organizing an all-male variation of this event, in which we take a stand against violence against women. I'm pretty sure most of the building is participating. It's just about showing support, I guess.

Kinda on topic, we had our annual Terry Fox run today and raised a whole lot over $20000, which is alot considered it's just OUR school, and they were only running from period 3 and came back for lunch and eahc person donated at least $5...
I actually forgot the actual total. i didn't participate since i cna't really run for long, i get cramps. T-T

But anywho, it's nice to see so many people participating in fundraisers. i try to participate in soem myself, if i ever find out about one in time or it doesn't cause me cramps and stuff liek that.

That actually seems very fun ^-^ I wish my town had more fund raisers like that!
