Neon Genesis Evangelion Shinji: Loveable or... Not?

I ask because someone (I don't remember who) once told me they hated him. I think he's more lovable than not, though I do think he does things that make him... highly irritating. ^_^;

Shinji is a real low-life pervert, there has been many references to this and the most outrageous one was from the movie when he 'does his thing' in the hospital near the beginning.

I like Shinji, when he's not all depressed.
He need to lighten up a bit, like the Shinji in episode 26 (original).
It whould have up if Kaoru wasn't an Angel and he had to kill him.

 

I hate Him
The crying little snot is the main reason Misato died in the movie. The only time i liked Shinji was in that episode were he grows some balls after beating Asuka in the sync tests. O.K he nearly died when he was comsumed by the angel but it was brtter to see Shinji do something for himself for once.

 

Shinji is one of my less favorite characters. One minute, he happy, the next he's suicidaly depressed. And the very next he's trying the strangle Asuka. What the flipp'in **** is with that? Plus he's just to much like a little girl who had just gotten smacked around a few times. I mean, I understand he had acrappy life but really. A person can only go so far before they wanna smack him around. He's to hard on himself, also.

Hm. On the one hand, I do agree that Shinji spends entirely too much time feeling sorry for himself, and not nearly enough actually doing anything constructive that might improve his life. Hell, I don't like those kinds of people in real life, why should I like them in anime? XD

But on the other hand, one has to respect that Shinji is a very realistic character. He doesn't always make the right choices, or the smart choices, and he does let things get to him. I actually prefer him to both Asuka and Rei on the grounds that he really shows the effects of his life's problems. You don't see a lot of characters who are so obviously depressed to the point that it takes you beyond sympathy, to actual resentment of the way they treat themselves and react to the world. I suppose I like the realistic approach to Shinji's feelings and behavior, though he's not someone I'd really enjoy dealing with in person. Then again, Asuka or Rei would irritate me just as quickly. XD

As for the whole idea that he's a pervert... Eh. I think "extremely troubled male with a fairly typical teenage sex drive" is more appropriate. I mean, hell, even Shinji admits that he's screwed up. But I don't see a lot there that's abnormal or terribly perverted. He's fourteen, come on - of course he's going to be horny!

 

I aggree with Raven there. He's one of my favorite characters in the series. He does have his good points and bad points. Sometimes he is annoing but other then that he's a good character.

To be truthful, my opinion about Shinji is polysemantic. Personaly, I really dislike Shinji's type in real life (although there are FAR worse types of people), but on the other hand, in anime I find him a rather interesting character, and I can perfectly understand why he is the way he is. But still, I highly disagree with the leading role he recieved through the whole Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, and I believe that I would enjoy Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series much more if either Rei or Asuka would a reiceve a leading role. In fact, one of the reasons why I like the End of Evangelion so much (it is among my top 10 favorite anime, even though it is on the last position) is because it wonderfully illustrates what exactly happens when everything depands upon the person such as Shinji; I mean…

…When everything was up to Shinji to decide, he initially accepted Third Impact, ruining Earth in the process, and then rejected Third Impact, ruining it too. And in result, even if humans will be able to regain their original shape after the Third Impact (the only other option is DEATH, since Third Imapct is no more), they will still have to somehow survive on the devastated planet. And while we were able to caught only a glimpse of a devastated Earth, what I have seen makes me to believe that the world of post-nucklear Fallout looks like paradise comparing to what Third Impact (according to Shinji’s wishes) turned Earth into. Will humans be able to survive upon such a world even if they will be able to return from the nothingness Third Impact has became after Shinji rejected it? Personally, I don’t think so…
