Anime shortening titles

i find nothing wrong when i see ppl doing YGO but it sometimes really pisses me off too to kindly say I DONT LIKE WHEN PPL SHORTEN TITLES i mean i know some ppl dont like to write inuyasha and write IY abreviating words like you to u dont bother me but to me it seems wrong to put a name of a TV show abreviated like my friends comic book TEARS OF BLOOD I SAW some ppl put TOB so i said WHAT IN THE SEVEN HELLS IS TOB?
they said tears of blood i just dont get it

 

I dunno~ i dont do it too much. I like to make sure people know what i'm talking about. But sometimes it just happens! i dont like ppl doin it tho...sometimes i'm too tarded to figure out what they mean...and i hate asking! anyway,just my thoughts!

Yes, sometimes it can be annoying when people use lots of title abbreviations. If the title is somewhat obscure or could easily be confused with something else it probably isn't a good idea. However, abbreviations are a fact of life, and most of the time you can figure out what the person is talking about. For example, 98% of the people who are even remotely familiar with anime will recognize that DBZ is an abbreviation for Dragonball Z.

As far as taking the time to type a title out fully, while it is a good idea in certain situations, I don't have any problem with people shortening things in most casual situations.

I see perfectly nothing wrong with shortening titles. When you're constantly talking about soemthing like Yu-Gi-Oh it gets PAINFULLY annoying to ahve to rewrite it ALL the time. I tlak about it basically 95% of my time, so of course I'm gonna shorten it. As for ones like Fushigi Yuugi becoming FY, once again nothing wrong. In case ya didn't notice, Fushigi Yuugi is a longer title than Yu-Gi-OH. Sailor Moon, I don't wanna hafta write Sailor ALL THE DAMN TIME!!!!!!!!! I'd rather shorten it to SM, thank you. Roruni Kenshin into RK, NOTHING WRONG! Dragon Ball Z ahs been called DBZ for as logn as anyone can remember

As for Cowboy Bebop becming CB, that's a friggin new one. I don't like that, or IY for Inu-Yasha.

So quit being a little priss and get over it. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but shortening titles is nothing to get all angry about. Soem of the shortening is very stupid, but it cna also show you have alot of liking topwrads the show. It means you obviously tlak about it sooooooooooo much that you've gotten tired of writeing it all the time so you shorten it. Plus people shopuld know you enough by now to get what you mean.

So yeah, get over it and live with it.

 

Zero, you really just need to learn to deal, I'm sorry. 200+ anime fans aren't going to stop abbreviating show titles because one person is annoyed by it. It's a fairly common practice to make things easier when typing. A bunch that I've noticed are as follows:

CB - Cowboy Bebop - this one is actually fairly popular, but not everyone has seen it.
IY - Inuyasha (or Inu Yasha, if you're one of the ones who split the title/name)
FY - Fushigi Yuugi
YGO - Yu-Gi-Oh!
RK - Rurouni Kenshin
CCS - Cardcaptor Sakura
DBZ - Dragon Ball Z (I use this one in speaking too)
AnC - Ayashi no Ceres
GW - Gundam Wing
GTO - Great Teacher Onizuka
NGE - Neon Genesis Evangelion
SMJ or SMJ-X - Saber Marionette J (or J to X)
SM - Sailor Moon
FFU - Final Fantasy Unlimited
MKR - Magic Knights Rayearth

These are ones almost anyone will recognize. It's done with games too, like the Final Fantasy series, and with Zelda games (LoZ: OoT, for instance).

Some others you might see around include Kodocha (Kodomo no Omocha) and Furuba (Fruits Basket).

If you notice my Inuyasha-related posts, I have a tendency to do this with names too, as it's rather tedious to type Sesshoumaru twenty times over when I can just as easily say Sessh or Sessh-sama. Same goes for shortening Inuyasha to Inu-kun.

It seems you don't get a lot of stuff, as such it isn't too surprising that you wouldn't understand an abbreviation. To be fair, I don't always either. However:

As you said yourself, the first time, after that you should be good to go. One time perhaps not understanding it should be a small price to pay for a bit of time saving when typing. Saving time is a good thing. You do it yourself when you shorten "do not" to "don't"

I like saving time (though that assertion is a bit weakened by the time I took digging up lame quotes for this post) and so do a lot of other people. Since you aren't likely to "get it" anyway, I see no reason to pander to you by not abbreviating things. In short, RX and JK rule. FLCL, SMK, NGE and APCCG are fun too. And Cheese Bread is gross.

Zero, don't bother to respond. It's not like he'll be back to see if he got any responses anyway. Just alert a mod or the admins and wait for it to be cleaned up.

 

Zero_Enna, don't get your hair in a knot. Yes, what MartL is doing is spamming, plain and simple. This is the second board I've visited that's been hit by his crass message, and I find it very offensive. However, instead of yelling at him, I would suggest reporting his post to a moderator and/or PMing a mod/admin. That's going to be more effective.

I think that the shortening of titles should be used sparingly. First of all, I believe that it is okay to use the shortened version after intially writing out the title (i.e. Tears of Blood, then later refer to it as TOB). Unless it's something that practically everyone has heard of (DBZ). It especially helps us newbies who are still trying to get the hang of this.

I go into some posts and I have no clue what they are talking about. Sure I know when there is mentioning of Final Fantasy (FF) or DBZ (because it's really popular). Other's are a little harder to distinguish so I go through the post(s) until they finally spell out the name of the full title (that's how I learned Rurouni Kenshin is RK, ect).

By following a simple structure of full title, then later references as the shortened it will greatly up the coherence of certain posts. That's just by ideas on it.
