Is it possible for a person to keep a friendly yet deceptive smile when she's or he's afraid or hurt? Is there such a person who really understands everyone's feelings? I don't know if there really is such a person... It seem so perfect of Touru that she is able to understand others and heal their wounds. But has anyone seen any negative sides in Touru character?

I have never met anyone like her. I don't know if anyone like her exists. As a rule, people aren't by nature, good. They may, like I do, endeavour to be good, but usualy end up being bad. Say something bad happened to someone, like they got up late and missed their bus or something, and that put them in a bad mood, then they shout at someone, putting the other person in a bad mood, who then say, slags someone, and so on. It's a shitty cycle.

the only thing thats negative about having a character like hers is this: theres always people that will walk over over you, and use you. this kind of person needs friends/loved ones to make sure this does not happen. ya know?

I know a couple people who look like the happiest people, always smile and help people a lot. and then I found out they have so much sadness in their own lives. but they don't show it.

    uh yea!

One reason i like the show so much is because i can relate to her so well. I used to be just like that. Years of pain kinda toughened me up though...

Well I think a lot of people can pretend to be happy... I'm sure we've all done it... But it's the honest to goodness trusting everyone thing that she has going on that others me... In this time and age, I doubt anyone would be as trusting and gullible as her.

    Actually,

I can say yes i've met someone close to Tooru's character in the way she is able to find the right things to say to people when they need it the most, how she's super friendly and an all around people's person. She's a bright femaled doctor i work with who despite having a personal issues with a terminally ill husband she's able to go to work every day with a bright smile and make her patients , nurses, collegues feel appreciated and comfortable around her. I never thought i'd meet someone like that but they do exists.

Anywyas going back to furuba...What the anime did to tooru's character is oversimplify her and left out what the manga deals with. On the outside tooru seems content but there are scenes in the manga that shows how truly depressed and alone she is. She doesn't tell people because she doesn't want to burden them. I don't understand why so many people have a hard time with this concept. I can relate to tooru on that level because i find it hard to seek help for myself. It's easier for me to be involved in other people's lives and want to help them but dealing with my own personal issues it's harder. Is it that hard to understand? i'm sure there are tons of other people like that.

Tooru is not dumb, she's not an airhead, she's not constantly happy, she's not anything people assume she is especially those who have only seen the anime (which i personally dislike).

    that's just my 2 cents

You raise a good point there Rin. I read the manga first(well, up to volume 6 anyway), so I knew about Touru and all her inner sorrow(see especialy the new years chapter), and I took it for granted that the turmoil was there, I didn't really notice if it was absent from the anime. But having seen both, I think the manga has a better story and better charicterisations, but the anime is funnier. I like both.
