Square Enix Speak like a Square!

    Alrighty, there are some pronunciation issues I would like to discuss. My friends and I get into arguments about this sort of ridiculous stuff all the time, and your support either way could end the brutal warfare that results from our Square-speech. I'm going to list some Squaresoft words, and you tell me how you say them, please. I'll also write out how I say them and how they say them, as phonetically as possible on a standard keyboard.

    1. Chocobo - I say cho-co-bo. They say co-co-bo. I have FFX dubbing on my side on this one, but still no go.

    2. Bahamut - I say bah-hom-mutt, they say ba-ha-mute.

    3. Tidus - me and Kingdom Hearts say tee-dus, they say tie-dus (which I do have to admit sounds better)

    Another pronounciation thread, hehe.

    1. Add on the Final Fantasy: Unlimited Anime series for further proof, even though it's not a particularly good watch. The original Japanese track has the characters saying "cho-ko-bo" as well. I side with you. Also, I could see "Cha-ka-bo", but where did your friends get the strange "ko-ko-bo"? Sounds like an island in the bahamas, or a drink served hot on cold winters... :p

    2. "Ba-ha-mute"? Very strange...I'm pretty sure this dragon legend's been around before FF's time, and "Ba-HA-mutt" is the way.

    3. Tidus. Japanese pronounciation is TEE-dus. If I recall right, FFX dubs it as "TIE-dus" and Kingdom Hearts as "TEE-dus". I would make the call that TIE-dus is the americanized way of saying the word, so this one I agree with either way.


    I have a few more:

    Yuffie. The correct way to say it is "Yoo-fie", but I still like the sound of "Yuff-ee" better... :p

    Rinoa. People like to mess this one up by switching the two middle letters, and calling her "Riona" or "Ryona". Pretty strange, and I still can't figure out how they read it that way. "Ree-No-Uh".

    1) It's Chokobo, no doubt at all. Your friends are just plain wrong.

    2) I say "Bah-Hah-Moot", that being the japanese pronounciation of all the vowels.

    3) I say Tee-dus, Tie-dus sounds better though. KH does say Tee-dus, because that's the japanese pronounciation most likelyly, but Tie-dus is good because it sounds like "tides," which fits in with the metrological themes of many of the FF main character's names(squall & cloud for example{I don't actualy know if there are others}). Noone in FFX ever says Tidus' name once actualy, he's always reffered to as "newcomer", "you over there", "you blonde freak in the yellow an' all", or something similar, so that you can rename him without the characters having to say that name.

    4) Yuffie is from wutai, right? Wutai is like japan, right? So wutaian names would be pronoucned the same as japanese names, right? Yoo-fee I say. Although Yuh-fee sounds better probably.

    5) Rinoa is Rin-oh-ah. That simple. People who say otherwise are strange strange people, and you should keep away from them or they'll attack you with a club and lock you in their cellar with no food or water for weeks, then peel off your skin while you're still alive to make a sofa cover. Well, probably.

    Co-Co-bo? Hmmmm, that's a new one lol. The ones I'm used to hear from people are 'Cho-Ko-Bo' (The way I say it) and 'Choc-Ka-bo'.

    I'm not too sure how to pronounce FF8's GF Quezacotl. I call it 'Kwes-sa-co-to'

    Since that GF rips its name off of an Aztec God, I'd say the "correct" prounounciation(sp?) would be the Aztec one.

    I guess Yuffie's kind of like Luffy in One Piece.
    My only problem with "Tidus" is, being a pathetic drama freak, I always think of Titus Andronicus (probably spelled wrong).

    What about spells?
    Is it "Fee-ra" and "fee-ra-ga" or "fie-ra" and "fie-ra-ga"? Probably an obvious question.

    I'd think of it as "fire-a" and "fire-aga".

    I hate FF8.

    "Yuff-ee" sounds better though :p

    ok I have trouble saying FF characters names :shy3:

    Sephiroth I say it like Seph-er-roth but I hear it is Seph-e-roth

    Aeris ( i dont think I spelled it right) I say it like Air-ris. I dont think I am saying it right

    The way I say it, Septhiroth is 'Sef-fer-roth' and Aeris I call her 'Air-rees' but that I'm not too sure on.

    Aeris is "Air-eess", which you can tell by the fact that there are two translations of her name from the Japanese version - Aeris and Aerith. Japanese pronounciation of "ith" often comes out sounding sort of like "iss".

    For Sephiroth, just pay close attention to how it's said in the final boss musical, One Winged Angel. They certainly say his name enough in it. :p "Seph-ee-roth".

    Seifer is pronounced as if it was in german, that's Sye-fer. Sephiroth is Seph-i-roth(suprise, na). I pronounce Fira and firaga Fee-ra/-ga, but I guess that's open to interpretation.

    Cool. Seifer was the one name I wasn't sure of. I always did pronounce it that way, though, since I figured it was a homonym name for "Cypher".

    well...bout Tidus, my big brother used to call him to-dis.
    even after we found out how 2 say it, he liked the way he say it ^^;

    and as for squall, my little brother calls him...su-qool...like ur saying so cool...

    and firga, i say it like...fire-ga...

    Here's what I think they are, but it's open for interpretation.

    Ayla: Ay-luh

    Lucca: Luke-uh (I think of it as "Luca" with an extra C...)

    Magus: It could be May-gus, Mag-us, or even Mayj-us, I suppose. I always thought it was Mag-us.

    Then again, I suffer from the Firaga pronunciation problem, so it's not like I actually *know* what I'm talking about. :dizzy2:
