Once again, I have started watching Lain. This time I swear I will finish, or at least not take breaks so long that I forget stuff and have to start over

This time around I'm watching with my mom. We saw ep 1 and she enjoyed it. This gives me a deadline.. have to finish before I go back to school. Hah, with that motivation I just may pull it off.

Persevere (gambatte!) and watch it all!

I just finished my latest rewatch last week. Of course, it took me 13 weeks to do it (one a week). But if you watch three or four a week it'll only take as many weeks.

well, up to ep 4. The both of us are still going. This is as far as I've progressed before, time to set a new record, as soon as the second DVD arrives..

Confusing? I haven't found it too bad yet. It sems straightforward. There are parts that I don't fully understand. In those cases, a: I will later so I don't worry about it, or b: I won't understand later, in which casse I wasn't meant to.

I just go with the flow. There is a lot I don't understand yet all right :)

Yeah, I started watching these again as well, since the farthest I got was somewhere around ep. 4, I think. I can't remember if I watched the 2nd disk or not. Anyway, I've been trying to sort through it all, and I do have to ask the question: Will ANYTHING make sense? For instance: When Lain says "Go Away!" and the MIB's weird goggle shatters. Will the whole relationship between the world and Lain be explained? I don't want spoliers, I just want to know if there will be some explanation.

Everything will be explained in the very end. It's just one of those quirky little things that stories do. Dunno, people think it makes it just a bit more suspensful. :D ;)

Anyway, you only did get up to ep. 4...so not much of anything has been said, though I think already a lot has happened. Lain's just one of those deals.

I'm thinkin' about getting the Lain Box...but I don't know what I'd do with the tin. Heh.

Keeping at it.. only two to go. I'll actually finish it this time. Seems to be making sense even. (leaves door open for someone to gleefully say "you'll be boggled by the last two!" don't worry, I'm not reading any more in this board until I'm done hehe)

It's been an interesting trip. My mom says some of her friends who tripped out to 2001 would enjoy this.

and that's that. quite nice. The last two eps were great.

I think I pretty much get it, which is good enough for me. There are still individual bits that I don't fully understand, such as the two versions of her sister etc, etc. but I'll go read up on it somewhere and figure it out.

The both of us liked it. Dad wandered in for the last 10 minutes. After a while, mom said "this actually makes sense btw." "sure" he sai, with that wonderful rolled eye look he does hehe. anyway, glad I watched it.

    SPOILER

I had the same feelings when I finished it the other day. It's disjointed and crazy, but ultimately makes sense, I think. And as far as the sister... I think she was a cloned spy sent by Tachibana... but who knows...

Anyway, a fine series. And it even has a happy ending... which is why I must declare... I like it more than Eva.

/me dodges double chaingun onslaught from YK and others.

and that may be the biggest shock of all :) I think I'll join you in dodging streams of lead, I really did like it.

Hard to forumlate why.. maybe I didn't like the giant robot and boring giant robot fights. Maybe I didn't like eva's reliance on using religious imagery in 'shocking' ways. dunno. Maybe Lain was just good.

Still, will i ever watch it again? It was just so slow.. I liked that actually. It was cool travelling along at the pace of normal life, getting to know what day to day life was like for Lain as things started to go weird. Left you as confused as she was. But for a rewatching, it might be detrimental.

Same with the interminable dumb giant robot fights in eva, though perhaps not as bad. I might be more likely to rewatch eva than Lain, even if I like Lain better.

Maybe it's the music? Hehe, I think Lain has some of the accompanyment in anime. Lounge techno or whatever.

Plus it's so drawn in that even "Infornography" was interesting...while if Eva did that...it would be Gendo talking in a room full of World Leaders about the coming trials. Wait...errr....just kidding.

well, i think there's alot of stuff better than eva....eva is waaaaaaaaaay to over rated...
lain is good cause it really makes you think about stuff...not sure what anymore, but it does...mainly the human unconscience thought...to think, in reality, we're all walking network cards lol

    Eva vs. Lain

Well, I like Eva a lot because I like giant robot anime a lot. I also think the story is... unique. However, I know EXACTLY why I like Lain more.

First of all, I have always liked the cyberpunk genre. William Gibson is a GOD! Anyway, Lain is one of the best cyberpunk series I have ever seen.

Secondly, Lain actually has a HAPPY ending. OMG, a dark sci-fi anime series that has a happy ending! Hell just froze over!

Thirdly, I enjoy the music in Eva a great deal, but the music in Lain was phenomenal!

Fourthly, I liked that Lain gave all the background information like Schuman Resonance and Vannevar Bush (all stuff that really exists) and takes it in a new direction, so if you wanted to, you can research these topics on the internet and learn more about the background informtion. Eva, OTOH, just takes a whole bunch of religious references and jumbles them all together, so that you COULD research some of these elements, but many of them have no business being tied together.

That being said, I STILL like Eva and think that Eva is a great series. However, Lain is certainly my new favorite.

/me looks around puzzedly, emitting clacking sounds from my nonchalantly held double chainguns.

What? Why would I make you a target for liking Lain more than Eva? I think I like Lain on a level rivaling Eva, though my favorite character is probably an Eva character. Lain, Eva, and Gasaraki are definitely my Triad, my Foundation Series, though these days I'm mysteriously finding Lain to be more enjoyable on the rewatch than Eva... add to that the fact that I'm being corrupted by certain shojo-like things and soon Cardcaptor Sakura will probably outnumber everything else I have, and you get one confused otaku.

edit: However, Boojiepop Phantom also might be my favorite... you need to see that one sometime.
