Watase Yuu Works Started watching FY again...

I guess I must be spoiled for choice or something these days, because between discovering fantastic new series like Noir, Angelic Layer, Steel Angel Kurumi and a veritable stack of others, the second Fushigi Yuugi box set has sat, unopened and forlorn, on the DVD shelf for several months.

I'd previously seen up to episode 24, the end of the first plot arc... And I've just started watching again, starting at 25. Errors on the disc made me have to dig out a dodgy old VHS copy of the series to see ep 26... (Watching VHS makes me feel positively nostalgic these days)...

Oh my god. Completely aside from the fact that I started watching this series four years ago, so revisiting the Universe of the Four Gods is like meeting old friends again... I'd forgotten what an amazingly good, tightly scripted and downright cruel series this is. Within a few episodes of starting off, I'd had an episode ending that left me literally gasping for breath, and a follow-on episode which had tears rolling down my cheeks; and after that, any semblance of holding emotional punches back was disposed of as the series sucker punched me again and again, both with unexpected developments and, in one very cruel instance, by telling me three episodes in advance that something terrible was going to happen, and then building it up so that when it did happen, the viewer fully appreciated the horrific consequences...

A masterpiece, a true masterpiece. I can't believe I let it sit on the shelf for so long. I've been very bad to FY, deserting it like that. It won't happen again, I promise.

hmm.. food for thought. I must say I abandoned it. It just seemed too much like a soap opera to me. Episode after episode of she likes him, but she does to, and he likes her, but wait, he's gay betrayal yadda yadda.

Of course, after a stellar review like the one above, I have to start asking myself if I was really awake when I was watching it last.. But now, my eyes are opened, maybe I'll get around to joining you in FY's audience.
