Hmmm...definitely Kikyo, she's probably one of the strongest (emotionally anyhow, how strong can a dead woman be physically?) anime girls I've seen so far, Kagome as well for that matter though she's considerably weaker then Kikyo at times. Ukyo's another favorite of mine as is Mimiru.

*thinks* Konzeon Bosatsu from Saiyuki, although... Well, considering she's a female-identifying hermaphrodite... XD Still, she's one of my favorite "female" characters.

There are times when I think I might have a fondness for Tatiana from Last Exile, but the jury's still out on her. She's got a determined, tough personality, although she has a period of emotional weakness during the series where she's coming to terms with things.

Merle from Escaflowne. She may seem like whiny, shallow comic relief, but the fact is that she IS a strong character. Considering that she was orphaned and grew up seeing Van losing his family too, I'd say she's got to be pretty strong to be so lighthearted most of the time. Her strength comes out in unexpected ways and places, and she shows more maturity than characters years older than she is, at times.

Yoko Nakajima from Juuni Kokki (Twelve Kingdoms) strong physically, emotionally etc. She had to go trhough a lot to get to be this strong character and we see it throughout the anime.

Usagi and Hotaru from Sailormoon. So much character development, there is so much they both had to go through, and the bravery of them both.. wow.

Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket. Strength isn't just physical. Hers was an emotional and spiritual strength. It washed though her, and touched everyone she met.

Mireille Bouquet from Noir. Wow! I won't spoil anything, but what she went through, what she did for a living, what her decision was regarding Kirika it showed so much strength of character, emotionally, physically, psychologically..

Deedlit from Record of Lodoss War - almost eternal is her life, and she is in love with a human, Parn, enough said. She is powerful and magical.

Arcueid Brunestud from Shingetsutan Tsukihime - Powerful, Immortal, Makes a sacrifice that shows great strength.

Haruka Shitow from RahXephon. WOW! again, such a strong woman, physically as well, but also emotionally. It's about Love here.

Pacifica from Scrapped Princess - Even though knowing what she knew, she was able to live and be happy.

Nami and Vivi from One Piece - Horrible things happened in their lives. It's their will to fight and live that makes them strong.

Tsunade from Naruto - I love her. hehe^^ she's powerful, brilliant, kind, and there's been a lot of hardship in her life. All these make her to be a very strong person.

More to come, since I know there's more I have seen ^^ just .. bit tired.. now..

Ranma from Ranma. You cant disagree with this one

    Ayanami Rei from NGE

    Arcueid Brunestud from NGE

    Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop

Excuse me? Arcueid Brunestud is from Shingetsutan Tsukihime. You must mean Asuka Langley. But Arcueid is still strong.

I think Akane Tendo is pretty strong too, as well as Raquel Casull and Seness from Scrapped Princess.

    Ayeka from Tenchi Muyo! Universe
While the princess, who is gifted with "beauty, intelligence and lots of power!" doesn't look to be physically strong, at least on one ocassion Ayeka is shown to wrestle with Ryoko as an equal, and we all saw what feats of strength Ryoko is capable of.

    Mihoshi from Tenchi Muyo! Universe
When this beautiful blonde GP officer takes a hold on somebody, nobody, not even Ayeka and Ryoko are capable of tearing her from them!

    Nagi from Tenchi Muyo! Universe
After getting hit by Ryoko's energy blast, which crushed her into a building, which in turn made this building collapse onto her, Nagi not only lived to tell they tale, she even made an attempt (although failed) to raise to her feet! An impressive feat, isn't it?

Lime, Cherry, Bloodberry, Tiger, Luchs, Panther, Marine, Baiko and Tamasaburo from Saber Marionette J, Saber Marionette J Again and Saber Marionette J to X
All Saber Marionettes, whether the are equipped with Maiden Circuits or not, are capable of impressive feats of strength; you really need to see just the first episode of Saber Marionette J to get the picture.

Morigan Armsland from Nightwarriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge
    Donya from Last Exile
Nothing like any of the previous characters, but this soldier girl of approximately fifteen or sixteen years of age was shown beating fully grown men in armwrestling! And judging from genuinely surprised expressions upon their faces, they weren't giving in to her!

Major Motoko from Ghost in the Shell
Her strength is not only in her fully cybernetic and thus supernaturally strong body, but also in her spirit, although it leads her to no small self-destructiveness. When victory is important, Major Motoko is willing to go as far as to attempt to force her way into a heavily armored tank with nothing but her bare hands... It was good that Batou arrived with some heavy firepower before it was too late, though.

Priscilla "Priss" S. Asagiri and Sylia Stingray from Bubblegum Crisis MegaTokyo 2032-2033
These two are capable of bearing pain and injuries that would have definately knock lesser women uncoscious. They aren't a match for Boomers without their Hardsuits on, though...

These girls are all I can think of right now.

    Oh let's see now:
    The Paper (Read Or Die)
She may look a little weak but this girl can really kick ***.

    Mistato (Neon Genisis Evangelion)
She's good looking and she's a fast thinker, able to come up with some awsome stratiges during the heat of battle. And she's also pretty handy with a gun.

Rio, Maya, Lilica and Nanvil (Burn Up Excess)
All these girls are experts in their feilds and they are all really good martial artists for when the battle gets up close.

Thats all i can think of at the moment, i'll come back with a few more if i think of them.

Let's see now[I apologize in advance for some of the horrible spelling since its 8 am and I've been awake at 5am --;]:

    Lina Inverse; Slayers.
She is very powerful with her magic and spells.

    Misao; Rurouni Kenshin.
Great ninja girl! She is both strong physically and emotionally.

And other few who had been mentioned, but I liked to mention these two since no one did, and they disurve to be :)

My turn, I guess! ^_^ I'll do my best to fill in stuff that people haven't as well. ^_^

    *follws Zanza-chan's footsteps*

Hakubi Ryoko (Tenchi Muyo!) - First, she does have to deal with knowing what she's done, even being controlled by Kagato. Second, she's had to deal with being rejected (though not badly) by Tenchi at nearly every turn. Third, she really doesn't know how to give up.

Haruno Sakura (Naruto) - She has to deal with both Naruto AND Sasuke's over-large egos. That in itself is amazing strength. But, also realize that Sakura has had to deal with Ino suddenly being her near bitter rival. She's also had to grow up in the ways of the Shinobi. Knowing and seeing friends die and to try and move on, with a smile on her face.

Mitarashi Anko (Naruto) - Being able to survive Orochimaru's already a great credit to her. Also being able to fight the demon seal without actually having it sealed like Sasuke did and STILL overcoming it...it's obvious she's got strength of will and the power to overcome anything. Well, at least, that's what it seems to be implying. Also notice that she's got the same seal as Sasuke, which was revered by the group that tried to capture him.

Miyazawa Yukino (Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou / Kare Kano / His and Her Circumstances) - Although vain and fake at the beginning, she slowly finds it within herself to BE herself. She gains strength and you SEE her grow as the anime/manga goes on. What truly shows her as strong is her indomitable will, and her unwillingness to give up. When ostracized by her class, she just takes it upon her shoulders and soldiers on until she solves the problem herself. Of course, I'm not really doing her justice in just writing it like that, but she is one of the stronger characters.

Ayukawa Madoka (Kimagure Orange Road) - She's the queen of mood-swings, but it's just her character. Absolute ice one moment, and the sweetest and gentlest person the next. She always follows her heart, and she really doesn't waver from it. Her only instance in doing so is by trying to decide whom she loved more, her best friend, or the one she falls in love with. And ONLY because she wanted them both to be happy.

Hiyama Hikaru (Kimagure Orange Road) - The other tip of the triangle. She's Madoka's friend and another love interest of the main character, Kyosuke. She knows and only knows that she's in love with Kyosuke. Madoka and Kyosuke are torn because they can't decide between each other and her. But, in the end, Madoka wins Kyosuke and Sakura grows from that. She keeps her cheerful demeanor, and even her love for Kyosuke, knowing that her best friend has him. I believe she's strong because she still knows that she loves him, but lets him go, even if she's so close to him, that it must hurt painfully.

Shitow Haruka (RahXephon / RahXephon Tagen Hensoukyoku) - Not only is she the tactical leader of the Rah and Vermillion teams, she's also fighting for the person she loves the most. Even if he was trapped in Tokyo Jupiter and is probably being used by the Mulians to do their bidding. Even if she MUST use him herself in order to guarantee that future (or past) that they wanted. Heck, she's even got to deal with her SISTER because she likes Ayato, too!

Anita (Read or Dream TV) - She's had to deal with her parents dying (apparently). She was by herself for days as a small child, hiding out in a church. Also, you see it when you watch her. She's stubborn, crass, but caring and passionate. She loves her "sisters" Maggie and Michelle, and slowly gains respect (and love) for Nenene. In fact, you could say she's strong just for DEALING with them.

Yuuki Miaka (Fushi Yuugi) - Just to be able to survive and keep the peace between all the members (especially the more rowdy ones) of the Suzaku Seven, I think she deserves a place here. Add to that the fact that she's got her One And Only torn away from her about three times, all completely forcibly, and that she TRIES (even though she gets handed Tamahome twice, once without memories and one last time WITH his memories) to move on.

Sakashita Yuzuyu (Aishiteruze Baby!) - Okay, so she's not really a "woman". In fact, she's 7 years old. But to have her mom leave her, I'd say she's already pretty strong. Although helped along by Kippei as her new "brother", she deals with the fact that her mother is still gone. Can't help to think that it hurts also, when mother sends her letters and all. But, I see her as strong.

Fuuko Kuzuha (I! My! Me! Strawberry Eggs!) - Pretty much the same reason as above. But Fuuko's already in High School, and mainly keeps it to herself about her plight. It's more something you have to watch to see how strong a person she is.

And that's all for now. I'll probably put more, once I can think up some good ones.

Well, here I go... naturally, these will all contain spoilers, so...

Temari (Naruto) - Well really I think being the only Genin aside from Naruto with enough chakra to actually be able to successfully summon is reason enough for this... but aside from that, I'd have to give her points for mental and emotional strength, especially when dealing with her two brothers, especially during the Chuunin trials (a cruel bully and a sadist if there ever was one).

Mitarashi Anko (Naruto) - I think Izzy said it best. That's really all there is to it.

Robin Sena (Witch Hunter Robin) - She has this sort of.. magnetic pull to her, it would seem, as the rest of the crew seems to take a liking to her, even Amon, although he never shows it. Though I'd give her points, much like I did with Temari, for a mental and emotional strength, as she doesn't get down and keeps at her job even when Amon condescends her at the beginning. For those of you who've seen the series, it'd be blatantly obvious she has strength in her powers of pyrokinesis.

Yurika Doujima (Witch Hunter Robin) - I know I'm going to get smacked or flamed or something for this. But, I find her strong in a certain aspect. She's certainly not physically strong. And at times she doesn't appear strong too mentally, as she's down on herself in the hunting department. However her strength comes in different areas. Her cheerily-dispositioned arrogance is really more of a charismatic social strength. She's confident in other aspects and, really... once you find out WHO she is.. it takes some, well not quite strength, but skill to pull something like that off... so it might not be strength, but I don't care. She's going on my list.

Fenris Fenrir (Ragnarok) - Yes, yes, I know, this is not an anime but rather a manga... but... come ON, Fenris is just so awesome, how could I NOT put her in? ;P C'mon. A great Warlock, master of magic, and she has a quarterstaff. It's like, a rule... any character with a quarterstaff is automatically put into the "Cool Book" (see Matrim from the Wheel of Time Seres).

Azalea (Sorcerous Stabber Orphen) - Really a no brainer. One of the most powerful magic-users.. transformed into an infamous giant dragon-lie beast.. takes over the body of another powerful magic-user (Childman).. and is born again into her normal self and has enough of a state-of-mind to cope with what she did and move on. Yeah. I'd call that strength.

Seras Victoria (Hellsing) - Of course, OBVIOUSLY this one has mounds of physical strength (among other things XD), but I also would consider her link to humanity a strength (while others call it more of a weakness). It makes for a interesting character since she's so in touch (or was) with her humane side, even as a Vampire, and resisted every urge to feed (of course, sometimes, she was just stopped XD).

Heinkel Wolfe (Hellsing) - Again, yes, yes, I know, another manga character, but she's just so groovy it's too irresistable (and just look at that name!). The Austrian-Assassinator babe of the Iscariot organization. She's ruthless, vicious and will get anything to get a job done and kill anyone the Iscariot tell her to. While this is not entirely strength, the fact that she always succeeds, I think, is. :)

    ~ ~ ~

There. There's eight, that should suffice for now.

Just gonna add/clarify a few things:

Shitow Haruka (RahXephon / RahXephon Plularitas Conciento / RahXephon Tagen Hensoukyoku) - I'm gonna add a little to this. Especially after reading through the RahBible/cliff's notes found in the box set for the movie. In the anime, it was really implied that Itsuki had an affair with her, although it might have been a more one-sided deal. In the movie, however, Haruka was portrayed to have waited 15 years to see Ayato again. Not only that, she pretty much CAUSES Ayato to make the final decision (when merged with the True RahXephon) to "tune" the world in proper fashion. She's also had to overcome the barrier of Ayato having Mulian/Blue blood, and being so much older than Ayato, who's only aged three years, compared to her 15. She fought, for so long, for love that transcended time and the TUNING of time. Enough so, that the Observer (that is, the TRUE RahXephon's goal) gave them the ideal world. That their love, and especially of Haruka's to Ayato, would be able to withstand the Mu, the Tuning, and just Time itself. She IS Ayato, as Ayato IS Haruka.

Kanzaki Akari (Battle Athletes: Victory!) - I thought she was the penultimate in the series. Of course, she *is* the main character. But, in the beginning (and through most of the series) she was "not good enough" in the eyes of nearly all her peers, except two. She constantly had to fight through oppression at the hands of extremely arrogant rivals for the title of "Cosmic Beauty". But she overcomes that, and runs faster than "light".

Quon (RahXephon / RahXephon Plularitas Conciento / RahXephon Tagen Hensoukyoku) - How hard must it be, to live so fully as she seemed to have, and know that should you succeed in becoming the True RahXephon...that she would bring about the end of the universe? Granted, it didn't seem like she actually LIVED in the series OR movie, but she was withdrawn, compared to the others. And Itsuki does pamper her, in supreme excess.

Sakaki (first name is unknown) (Azumanga Daioh) - Yeah, it's actually an out-and-out comedic anime. But, remember, Sakaki DOES imply that her mother hates cats. And cats seem to hate Sakaki. Yet, nevertheless, she does go to veterinary school in order to study (among all things) cats in order to help them. Of course, it DOES seem a bit wierd that the cats really left her alone as soon as Kuroneko was scared off by Maaya.

    ...and that's it. For now.

As you can see, me and Amon_Sena really dug deep to get the REALLY strong feminine powers. ^_^

    Equality, baby!

Edit: More on Anko's Cursed Seal

Mitarashi Anko (Naruto) - To clarify, Anko's seal is exactly the same as Sasuke's. A set of 3 reversed Yang symbols, as compared to the Sharingan eyes, which are turned in the opposite direction. Anyway, Kabuto (or one of the Four Sounds that kidnap Sasuke) reference that this particular seal, otherwise known as "Heaven", is equal in power to the Gaia seal which Kinimaro uses. In case you need to know, the Gaia seal expands Kinimaro's bone-manipulation techniques to the utmost. I think this also pertains to the strain it puts on the body when they haven't fully transformed yet. Or are in the process of transforming without "transcending" as the Four Sounds and Sasuke did. Before they put Sasuke in the wierd barrel, his power ups to "Level 1 Orochi-power" seemed to put him in pain, or would put his body in a real strain, especially in conjunction with the Sharingan. And it's obviously powerd by the anger he feels, it would most likely be the same with Anko. However, we see that Anko's seal only acted when Orochimaru was around and he forcefully used it to stun her. Other than that, the intense hatred that Anko obviously feels for Orochimaru did NOTHING to activate the new power levels that people with the seal are supposed to have. So, again, she must have UTMOST control over her body over the cursed seal. It also shows that Anko, with Sasuke, were among Orochimaru's favorites. Oh, and the fact that Anko was able to stand up to Orochimaru at his full strength (though obviously holding back) is also a tribute to her physical strength.

    /end Anko rant.
