Yeah, this really doesn't belong here, but it's here (edit: Serial Experiments Lain, cause I moderate it) first because of my autonomy. It may even be here for a limited time only, like the first volume of Azumanga Daioh that (edit: Almost; it's mine!!! Mwa ha ha ha ha!) slipped through my fingers...

A young westerner went to Russia for a year on an exchange program. One day he went to the market and bought a fish. He took it home and soon discovered what a pain it was to skin, debone, trim, and finally cook. So, by the time the cooking started, he was in a hurry as he had some other things to do.

The fish was not cooked hot enough for long enough.

Anyway, everything seemed to be all right. However, a few weeks later he started to get sick. It didn't seem like anything major, you know, so he tried to just carry on with life as usual. It wasn't long until he got really sick. No matter how much he ate, he was losing weight rapidly. He was miserable.

So, the young man finally went to see a physician. The doctor said it was obvious he had a tapeworm. So, the doctor gave him some pills to kill the tapeworm and told him to take the pills for three days and stay home and rest for two weeks.

The young man went back to his apartment and got ready to take the first pill. As he was opening his water bottle to do so, however, he couldn't help but start wondering about the worm. It was a living thing, wasn't it? Didn't it have a right to live? Weren't parasites just a part of life? Where did the tapeworm's rights end and his begin?

Did the young man take the pills? Or not?

The young man certainly would be a fool to sacrifice his own life to save the tapeworm. As the tapeworm would die with him.

If you ask me, I think he's still agonizing over the bottle of pills even now. He may even think the worm speaks.

Did he or did he not? At that moment, he did not. Of course not, he wouldn't be in a quandary if he did. However, I think he WILL take the pill. Long as he researches what a tapeworm is...like UK said, it's a parasite...so it dies when you do.

So dude better have swallowed the pill. But...it'd be pretty freaky if he was thinkin' somewhere along the lines of, "Though I may die, and it with me, I'll live my life to the fullest beforehand."

    It's open-ended, kinda like Eva :)
Of course one conclusion is far more logical than the other.

But this goes beyond one man's diphyllobothriasis (fish tapeworm infection) and pernicious anemia, and isn't solved with Biltricide and a bottle of Monastirskaya.

The young man should take the pills now and kill the tape worm. Why not? He killed a fish in order to get the tapeworm in the first place. Though perhaps he like being able to eat as much as he wants without becoming large..

I'd kill the thing. He should too.

    Hey, where'd my autonomy go?

Well anyway, call it an abuse of moderator power but I wanted to keep full control of this one to myself. I guess I should've just stated I was going to keep it where it was for three days, give my final statements, then lock it and throw it in the wastebasket. If I can't do that from here, I'll be disappointed.

As long as you took the time to move it, I ask that you take the time to give your interpretation :)

For a story that makes you think about moral issues that was just plain stupid. To be honest I prefere the stories that make you squeel and go eew.

Edit: Please do not make offensive comments of the sexual nature.

Irrelevant. One dose of Biltricide for El Marco, please.

Here is the official timetable. I'm allowing about thirty more hours for people to figure out what this parable is about. After that time, I will give the Interpretation and kill the thread.

Very well. I can't imagine to think of what the man must've been thinking. The parasite obviously needed to go. I for one, would readily kill it - and next time make sure I cooked my fish long enough.

There are many answers to this question,,, But the true answer is to what and why you yourself posted this question...

Thus I dont know why you posted this.. because i think you posted it for a reason.. Thus I can not give you the Answer..

From what I can tell, there's been a lot more 'Cide handed out recently.

Yeah, I know people can't read my mind or anything, but if they can figure out what I'm really talking about here before getting the interpretation, they'll learn it a whole lot better. (i.e. the learning sticks with you better when you've worked through something yourself).

That makes me reconsider killing it right away. Maybe I'll give another parable I thought up at the 72-hour mark instead of the interpretation. I'll have to think about it.

Oh, the abortion theory. Sorry I didn't respond. No, it's not about abortion, not in the context I originally thought of the story, anyway.

    Mercy killing?
Exploitation of workers in the 3rd world?
    Rainforest destruction?
Tapeworms being like those legendary talking fish that grant you a wish if you spare them? Or maybe those same fish give you tapeworm if you kill them?

    I have no idea...

Nephilim_X, I think you're thinking too big. I guess it's my fault for choosing such an obscure method of making a statement about such a small matter.
