I still think the best RPG of all time is FF6 (FF3 in North America).

Honourable mention goes to Planescape: Torment for best PC RPG.

I've got a few favourites, so I'll just list them, in no particular order.
Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy Tactics (see a trend here?), Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Summoner, Shining Force, Shining Force II, Phantasy Star IV, Dragon Warrior, Dragon Warrior Monsters, Icewind Dale, Star Ocean: Second Story, Might & Magic VII, and Might & Magic VIII. I hope I didn't leave anything out ...
I must say, however, that nothing beats a good pen-and-paper RPG, such as Dungeons & Dragons (2nd or 3rd edition, I love 'em both), Dragonball Z, or Vampire: The Masquerade. There's more versatility with these, and your story is limited only by the GM and players, not by a pre-written story line.
