I picked up a copy of the new High Performance series US CD pressing of
"Snowflakes are Dancing", it ran $12.99 (US) at a CD shop where normal
CDs are like $16.99., Probably a step up in price from the old Surround series

Its part of a 2000 issued series of classical albums, no other Tomita
CDs are mentioned (mostly Ormandy orchestral recordings). It was
remastered by US engineers with a Sonic Solutions at 96/24 and obviously
    bumped down.

"Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" is included.

the cover is the original US cover inset with a "High Performance"
border, but the type is redone in a plain manner. No Tomita logo!!!

inside is black and white and has the original US notes and synth list
for Snowflakes and again for Prelude. There is one page of what Tomita
has done since (Sound Cloud), but it ends in 1992.

There is a candid photo of Tomita and 2 unidentified engineers looking
pensively, not much to look it, so its a little lame. Then a page on how
they re-mastered it, which I gess is informative, but the other full
page of these U.S. engineers staring at soinic solutions is real boring
(for those who haven't seen Sonic Solutions, .... you cant really here
its too small :) but rest assured its less visually interesting than
ProTools or Cuebase, though its a top choice for pro mastering. There's
even an insert shot of the screen, but its only a fifth enlarged the
main photo and looks identical. Its kind of pointless. Probably there
because that part of the big photo is dark. Gee maybe there are no shots
of the Moog because it looks way more cool. (But you can see a Lexicon
BRC on the table, which means they might be tinkering with reverb on
    some fo their releases.)

    from the caption
"Computer Waveform Monitor" = a mac monitor with Sonic on it
"keyboard controller" = a mac keyboard

I have the first US CD, but not the circa '92 Surround series version.

Haven't side by side played them.

the new one has a wide dynamic range from quiet to loud. I don't hear
the distortion the old CD had. It still has tape noise very clear in
portions. It sounds clear but not all that warm, not brittle at all, but
doesn't have that bloom. Still making up my mind, certainly worth
    checking out

It may have been hekpful to explain in your post what this means exactly.
    IMHO its a bit jargonny.

Want a copy of the Surround? I have the UK 84 original, which has that
nasty bass distortion too (same master presumably)

Probably meeting up with the man himself again next week. He's back in the
    studio here for some mixing.

Sorry List Members all; my earlier posting was meant to be private (not
that its that secret or anything really :)

Tomita-sensei if I get to meet him? It may well not hgappen, but in case it
    does...

    Best wishes,
    Ben

    huh?

I did forget to mention the new one is also Dolby Surround. I assume the
surround effect is at least slightly different.

    jargonbuster:

96/24 is the general higher spec digital rate and depth that whatever
replaces the compact disc is most likely going to use. The major labels
are trying to do as much current digital work as possible at this spec
so they have a stockpile of material when a new format comes along. This
release is a regular CD but they promote their use of a higher spec in
    its making.

Sonic Solutions is expensive pro level Mac software and hardware for
    preparing CD masters.

My point is weither you are a computer gearhead or an analog gear head,
looking at a mac sitting on a desk is pretty ho hum compared to a Moog
IIIc (not seen in the re-release booklet)

    but I like RCA's jargon--

its not a mac on a desk (running Sonic)
its a "Computer Waveform Monitor" and a "keyboard controller"

Hi Erwin and guys and gals (do we have any females on board BTW?)

I see no reason to think that his plans have changed (see
    http://homepage.eircom.net/~cloud/tomita/interviews_one.html( but of course
    I'll ask.
