Anime The Hakkenden (Um... huh?)

Okay I rented the first two episodes, and although the animation varied from "amazing" to "utter crap" the story intrigued me. I ended up purchasing a complete boxset (13 episodes) off eBay, and boy am I dissapointed.

After the first couple episodes the series just trails off. There is no continuity between the characters and what they're doing from one episode to the next (after about 4 or 5 episodes that is). The only thing that keeps anything together is the fact all these warriors where meant to fight side by side from birth. I'm sure if I read the book I'd understand everything a little better, but this Anime just left me more and more confused as I continued to watch it.

I just really wish they had done a better overall job, because after the first two episodes I was psyched for more. The story really stood out from most animes. Has anyone else seen this series, and if so what are your thoughts.
