So I had to work on my Junior Project recently, and today, the 'Final Rough Draft' was due!

It's apparently on the history of Anime. Let's keep in mind that the teacher knows squat about Anime, and I'm lazy, but it won't change the fact that I researched well the main facts!

The History and Evolution of Anime

The evolution of mankind took thousands of years to produce into it’s final form that we as human beings currently take. The evolution of Anime was something that happened constantly. Entertainment that tries to endeavor into making our lives a bit more interesting, or just giving us something of interest in itself. Evolution or not, Anime is still here. Just like the American cartoons kids watch on a regular channels. Started from a single book of pictures and captions, Anime has expanded into a universe of stories, be it fact or fiction.

Anime is a Japanese word that when translated into the English dialect, it becomes “Cartoons”. Like it’s predecessor, the “Manga”, or “Comic”. Like the cartoons any kid would watch today on a regular channel, such as Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon, Anime too is a Cartoon. However, its expansion into today’s culture is at a high influence into society.

Most people see or think that Anime is really just like the Western Cartoons, and that it doesn’t make a difference. That however is only superstition. Within the Anime, the show of the Japanese culture takes place in almost every single Anime. The most popular of these of course is the fact that people are not allowed to wear shoes inside a school, or any building for that matter. Most Anime usually show scenes of the students entering schools, going into their shoe locker, and changing from shoes to flippers. Or maybe other things like a regular Japanese tradition, the Kimono. A Kimono is a three piece outfit that is worn by some traditional Japanese citizens, but it doesn’t mean that it’s gone out of style by any means. Other differences are a bit for more mature audiences. Keep in mind that in this case, mature does not mean you really have to be seventeen or eighteen to watch it, it just means that one with a low level of maturity or just with a “wrong” mind couldn’t be able to watch it. Some of the cases in Anime would be two girls, be it friends or sisters, sharing the same bed while sleeping. Or two young girls taking a bath with their father. Not only culture, but the style that makes Anime famous. Most Anime characters tend to have big or shiny eyes, others that obviously are completely out of proportion with regular human eyes, but it’s what give Anime a better look, and makes it more interesting. Not only that, but also gives in the big differences between Anime and western Cartoons.

However, Anime never always was as it now is. Like almost everything in this world, something always starts with nothing. One of the lessons taught in one of the current Anime called FullMetal Alchemist is “Equivalent Exchange”. “To obtain, something of equal value must be lost”. Oddly enough, that is what was required for Anime to be done. Not something, but rather someone is what started it all. Osamu Tenzuka (1925-1989) was that person. He earned the nickname ‘Manga No Kami-Sama’, or as the English dialect suggests, ‘The God of Comics’. A nickname only earned like he did it. Forty years in the industry of Manga, over 150,000 pages drawn, and the many changes of styles that he was around to see was what gave this man the experience.

‘Manga no Kami-Sama’, as well as the other Japanese writers saw the western Animation that started shortly after human movies were being made as an experience. Pointers, and turn it into something else, something they could call their own. After this, the revolution in the industry started to take place. In the glory days of the new big stars such as Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, or Tom and Jerry, Dr. Tenzuka gave Japan its own star. A robot that looked like a young boy, or as not only the Anime’s title, but the robot’s name suggests, “Astroboy”.

Not more than a year after the airing of “Astroboy”, Anime had already made a big change. Back when most television stations weren’t even broadcasting twenty-four hours a day, or when the fact of over a hundred channels was just a myth, “Astroboy” was licensed to the United States. However, in its western translation, most things in the Anime were indeed changed, which didn’t give “Astroboy” as big a hype as it deserved. Changes like name or parts in the storyline even. Nevertheless, “Astroboy” is still remembered by some of America’s youth.

As much a success that ‘Astroboy’ had however, it was an Anime that was considered more inteded for the young youth. This of course meant that not the necessary amount watched. Anime needed more. In the year 1979, somewhere in between the hype of the beginning of the ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy, Anime saw the first of the Trilogy’s movie as more of a lesson. In base terms, it took the idea, deconstructed it, and made it into something else. The result was what some may call ‘The Next Big Thing’ today, a show called ‘Star Blazers’. This of course doesn’t mean that the show is a complete copy of the Star Wars franchise, but rather, a similar idea. The story of course was completely different, but the mythological idea of planets in a galaxy being united, monsters, and all of those things one would see in the films were now on Anime. This series was really intense, especially for young boys and girls.

This of course had a backfire, a positive one. Older audiences who in the past would look away on Anime since it was more childish, now began to take interest. This gave the last fragment of inspiration that writters needed to start making real Anime. Soon thereafter, more Anime was made, and in a short amount of time, Anime would see to it thatit’s library of titles would expand in a wider range of broadcasting time on televisions, but also made it into homes without cable television with the newly invented VCR.

Since then, Anime made changes, and only for the better. And soon, Anime would have more terms that watchers would only be able to understand. Lots of terms need a little bit of maturity to take, but are simple nontheless. An example is ‘Fanservice’, which to some might mean simply service for Anime fans, but this is a specific kind of service. It means pictures of ‘good looking/cute’ Anime or Manga girls or guys. There’s lots of terms, including preety much the main one in English, ‘Otaku’, which basically, it means that an Otaku is a real big fan of Anime.

Mature things had indeed expanded in the past, but around 1980, it went into making the H-Rated Anime. The real life term would be known as porngoraphy, but since it’s cartoons, Anime to say the least, it earned a new new which was obviously simpler than ‘Japanese Cartoon Pornography’, ‘Hentai’.

Other turns in Anime were the more terms of realism, which of course included a lot more of blood and gore into Anime. Some would use it in a mature, but reasonable level where it can be viewed by almost any audiences, but others would take it to the extreme, yet some audiences still did not mind.

Aside from the level of growth in the mature basis, Anime also expanded in the quantity of titles it had in it’s library. One of the most popular Anime type is the Anime that takes place in school. Especially for it’s unique choice of wear, especially with the female uniform, on which girls wear mini skirts (really ‘mini’, to say the least), and a sailor-like shirt. Also the Anime that contains giant robots is always a big hit, these are titled “Robo-Anime”. Others of course include the way of the Samurai, containing popular titles such as Ruroni Kenshin (US Titled-Samurai X), and the way of the Ninja, with even new big hits like “Naruto”. Also, one that makes Anime worthwhile is anime that contains more of mythical creatures, such as Demons. When thought out well, this topic is the best field in Anime, but also the hardest to make. And the biggest one is what started it all, Kid’s Anime, or japanese titled, “Shoujo Anime”.

Anime has expanded, and in a wide range. On this day demanding DVD’s, toys, Wall-Scrolls (Big posters made out of cloth), and even bigger things where Anime lovers can have a day or two to themselves and get together, Anime Conventions, which of course most people go Cosplay (dress-uo and mimic) Anime characters.

In conclusion, Anime has made a big change from it’s beginning, to it’s early agesm up until today. While we might still be getting new Anime every day, month, or year, people still remember the first Anime. Especially when DVD Re-Releases of Anime (such as the original Astroboy) are still being released in the US. Not only has it vastly grown,, but it will only continue to grow for many years to come. Each year, or decade has a big hype. The nineties bring us ‘Pokemon’, ‘Sailor Moon’ and ‘Dragon Ball Z’. The new millenium brougth the ‘Excel Saga’, and ‘FullMetal Alchemist’, tomorrow, who knows? What people do know as a fact is that Anime will never die, it will only become bigger. Definetly not by itself, but with the help of the devoted fans.

It's decently done. There's a few grammar errors and such, but all in all it's fairly well done, for American standards. I'd never have been able to write about anime for an essay. XD

Yesh. Somehow, my Microsoft Word doesn't have the spell check thingy. I wanted to send it to myself on a PM, and get it from school, center it again and such, and fix grammar, but I don't have the time between clases to do that. At least I thought I didn't.

It's a rough draft, my question is, am I accurate on the History?

As it is now, I would give it a C-. But if you fix the spelling and grammar errors, I would give it an A.

I'm not one who really knows the storyline of how anime came to be, but didn't the movie Metropolis have an important role?
