According to the quiz, I'm a 'Super Otaku'

 

eeehehehehe I am almost an Otaku. This is what I've always aspired to. I'm afraid I don't know or care enough about pokemon or sailor moon, and I don't tend to sing along with Initial D, though I could. And Tenchi isn't one of my favorites. I'd like to think I've moved beyond that poll, and am off the scale hehe

It says I'm "almost an otaku". I guess that means I really am just another nerd ...
I don't really think that test was very well-written, though. It doesn't really cover all the bases, if you get my meaning. And what real otaku watches Pokemon? It could use more balancing of variables and consideration of other influences. It's not generic enough, either. Too case-specific.

I just took the liberty of perusing the questions of the above linked test... it's too series specific, and while I do know otaku who could score perfectly on this test (except the 'only japanese you know is 'kawaii' 'baka' etc...' they're nearly fluent) they aren't the paragons of the ultimate 'Super Otaku' by any stretch of the imagination (as in, they don't represent the interests of the whole otaku community any more than I do), like Ice cream fanatics, or movie buffs, or sports fans, there are different types, different preferences among the groups. Personally, I'd call it a pretty narrow-minded test, though there were a few good general otaku questions there. (e.g. Cosplayed? Conventions?) Ideally, the entire test would be comprised of many many questions, all of a general nature. Stuff like, but not limited to, Do you read fanfics? Do you own any wallscrolls? or even, Do you watch series over and over again? (y'know, stuff that can be answered yes or no by anyone who watches *any* anime, not just Ranma, Slayers, Tenchi, Pokemon, Initial D, and Sailor moon, I think I missed one of the series they referenced, but oh well, a set of 8 series is far from being the whole of anime, or even a decent representation of it)

So, now that I've put in my two bits about that test... anybody seen the one I took a while back that was over a hundred questions, none of which were series specific? Now that one was good. Only one problem, I lost the link...

Holy crap, I didn't mean to offend you or anything!!

I do agree that about 7 questions don't fit though... those being:

-"Do the names Megumi Hayashibara and Koyasu Takehito have any special signifigance to you?"
- "Do refer to Sailor Moon as "serena"?"
- "Can you (and do you) sing along with initial D songs?"
- "Can you (and do you) dance along with the ending theme song of Tonde Burin?"
- "Are Ranma 1/2, Slayers, and Tenchi Muyo on the top of your favorite anime lists?"
- "Can you name all of the Pokémon? In order?"
- "Do you pronounce "sakura" as "sah-KOR-a? (or sah-KUR-a)"

No offense taken, I was just ranting on about what I think tests like that should be like.
yah... questions about specific series, seiyuu, characters, or songs are just too narrow to properly survey such a broad topic as 'otaku-ness'

In a nutshell, an otaku is an anime fan. Nothing more, nothing less. Some people like to add a few adjectives in that description, but mine's basically the truth.

 

Nah, Otaku translates to a person obsessed with anything.
The otaku marionette collectors from Saber Marionette J for example.

Oh and DrunkLeprachaun, don't worry about it... you'll be able to answer all those questions with a blind fold after being here for a while If you have any questions about an anime, or a subject we're discussing just ask.
