yea that was me who suggested that it should only be a two console busiiness. I like only having two systems in the video game war, it is a better war that way. Three is a little too much. But give it another two to five years. Like when the PS3 and the next Microsfot system comes out then the Nintendo GameCube will fade away just like the Sega Dreamcast did. They even said they do not plan on making another system until the GameCube is almost a decade old.
But I guess we will see what this new system will bring. But will only get to see it in March of this year. It will not launch until November. So I guess we have a long wait to see what it can do and to see if any game publishers will join them.

No, they haven't made any definitive plans regarding making a new console.

Besides, it took a LONG time for the NES to fade away. It had double the effective marketing life-span of the N64, along with the majority of consoles. Why? Because Nintendo was in a game focused stratagem-mindset at the time, not console-based.

Trust me. Nintendo will not just fade away.

Anyway, I don't see much in the way of good luck for this new system. The market is simply too crowded with companies taking on a zergling-rush-mentality when it comes to machines.

Izzy is in total agreement with Neph on the new console's frivolity. I mean, nowadays, people have been going with what's worked. I mean, even the 'box, though by no means a veteran of the console game genre, has experience.

Nintendo has been around since FOREVER. And they, at least, have their heads screwed in halfway right. Not to say that the Virtual Boy and the N64 was a "good idea"...but...in all honesty, why did so many people buy them? Because NINTENDO is good. The console may not be, but its backer is. And besides, Nintendo has the rights to Metroid, Mario, Kirby, Zelda, etc. It's not like they're gonna be let out anytime soon, so if you want to play those games, you're gonna have to get the latest Nintendo console. And...well...they have smart people working for them, in theory.

Sony had the world leading Playstation, and people trust them to make a really big impact the same way with the PS2. In fact, it's a symbiosis...but, whatever. Truth to say, a ton of people are still BUYING the PSOne. Truthfully. I mean, I deal with about 3 - 4 people a day saying they want one. Sony ALSO has the experience...and they were the first ones to SUCCESSFULLY launch a CD-based console. (*ahem* Sega CD *ahem*)

Microsoft will do good no matter what, I think. Because, I mean, the freaking owner can support the market by HIMSELF...so why wouldn't it flop? If it does, then he'll just push for more advertising, more growth, more "new". There's just no way Bill's really gonna just LET the Xbox fade away...I mean, it's another MARKET to conquer! In any case, a lot of people ALWAYS want cutting edge (*whistling innoccently*) and Microsoft will always provide that...in more ways that one. They're just...expensive is all.

I even expect Sega to make a comeback. Not anytime SOON, but they still own the rights to Sonic and a few other games that are pretty darned popular (Sega GT and Crazy Taxi come to mind). And they've been around just about as long as Nintendo. The giant remains, but I think he's just sleepin' off the weariness from bad marketing and iffy products that are out before they're meant to be.

The new one...has nothing, I believe. Well, noobs always get the heave ho...but if the team has the courage to stay right on top of it and keep adapting to the market...then I'm pretty sure they'll find a niche. You gotta remember though, all of the game consoles out NOW had GREAT gaming backup. Nintendo, I believe, had Samus already in progress when the Cube was launched. The GBA has Kirby....and EVERYONE loves Kirby. Xbox had Microsoft itself, as well as most of the same companies that Sony itself has...with a very poor exception of Square...(that SUCKS!). Sony had a BAJILLION games lined up...and I'd wager anything that as soon as Sony had claimed that Square would be working with Sony through the PS2...about a million more japanese orders (only there, mind you!) were willing and ready to shell out the cash.

The best people can say is that we'll see what happens. The market is really ready for a new gaming console company, as the 'box just came out, relatively speaking. However, it'll be intersting to see what the reaction to it will be by the three giants if and when it comes out. :D

Another reason Sony does well is that it is the 'zergling-rush' of video game companies.

Aside from a well-recognized brand name, the sheer number of titles means something for everyone, and the sheer volume of bargain bin games like Pong 3D to the large RPGs like Xenogears means everyone, from old veteran who can't handle the speed of todays games or just wants a quick 15 minute break, to new kids who loooooooove their rpgs gets some.

The only thing I really hate about Sony is the disgusting fanaticism some of its fans display. Yes, the PS2 is a good console, but its certainly not the only one with good games. Sony has a sort of 'get as many games out as possible, there has to be at least one diamond in that pile of crap' mentality when it comes to publishing, and for every Final Fantasy 7, theres a couple hundred Beast Wars.

Hell, just look at the buzz generated by the Final Fantasy game coming to the Gamecube. Half the PS fans who found out thought "well it will suck cuz it aint on a Sony system". Thats bullocks. FF6 is regarded as one of the best, if not the best, and some of the earlier FFs are good. Meanwhile the fanbase is divided on the quality level of FF8, FF9, AND FF10!

I for one believe it's games, NOT names, that make a system. Which is why this 'Phantom' system is going to have a hard time with no Final Fantasy, Metroid, Zelda, Mario, or Halo.

According to that, the system wont need names. It claims to have cross platform capabilities.I wonder how true that is?
    Thats a pretty big claim.

It's also nice n vague. For all we know, we could get to play 3DO and Atari Jaguar games (although I don't think they're that dumb).

GC games are on little mini-dvds.

Anyway, no, if they did use three places, it'd be ineffecient and jack up the price. It's probably gonna be just one space for disks, and personally I doubt that they would use buttons.

Either theres a menu at the start-up sequence, or the system is automatically determined via programming 'watermarks', like the structure of programming for each system, or information on the disk.

It's not really copyright infringement... see, originally they had it set up so that the hardware had the 'key' to start the game... but I have *NO* idea if they set up anything to stop that.

But for all I know the rules have changed...

With emulation (which is what this machine is effectively doing), the law basically says you can keep the ROM if you own the game, but it says nothing about the console. And, as you own the game if you're playing it on this machine...

Anyway, most of this is speculation at this point. Too soon to say.

If cross-capability is implying what I think it is, that wont be an issue. a LOT of gamers hate shelling out thousands of dollars so they can play all the games, but if you could play them all for just a few hundred...

Yea I know it took a long time before they made the transistion from NES to SNES. But the only reason they made the SNES was probably cus the Sega Genesis came out (or was going to come out, not sure which one came out first) and was going to take them out of the console business. If they have not made the SNES they probably would have been out. Just like now, if they do not plan on making another system and releasing it with the next 4 to 5 years than they are going to be taken out of the console war.

And Izzy about Nintendo owning Zelda, Mario, etc.. Well Sega owns Sonic, I think, and other titles and now they are making games for other systems. So if Nintendo went out of the console business does not mean they have to go out of the gaming business. They can still make Zelda and Mario for other systems.
