Check it out for yourself, would be manga-ka:

Here we have what looks to be a talent search for original material coming from this side of the ocean...I'm afraid it's only open to US residents, but even then it has the cool premise of having published material.

Thought you might wanna check it out when I got wind of it. :D

Im going to try next year. I just started creating mine this month. I want my art skills to improve alot so that I have a chance. I started using the nice pens you dip in ink and they make so much of a difference. Anyway, Ive been working on character design for about a month now. I really want to get some original characters and themes in it, as well as a very interesting story line.

Personally, some of the mangas in the contest that win dont disserve it. Some are really, really good, but I dont know how a few make it lol. The strange part is that those people could get so good if they tried a little harder.

I encourage everyone to try this though. Its a positive activity that improves your drawing skills alot.

I've read the first manga for this, and the first place winner was pretty nuts (the Hambly pair). Most of the art styles for both volumes look very Americanized/Westernized compared to Japanese fine artists. But I guess the judges respect original styles more than the aim to create a style that merely looks like Japanese styles.

What I do like about this contests is you gotta have a story that's not like the anime cliches (like high school love triangles, etc). What I don't like is that they don't specify whether or not drawings can be done in grays as opposed to strictly pure black & white.

Wouldn't it be cool if there was a contest similar to this, but meant for colored manga? I mean, there are lots of skilled CGers these days that we could have a manga compilation book with just them.
