Here's what director Ridley Scott has to say about the making of his 1979 movie 'Alien'. I have heard rumour that Tomita was at one time scheduled to compose the score, as Scott was a big fan:

"I wanted the alien to have a certain kind of fascination and delicacy, like this massive toy coming towards her [Veronica Cartwright's character], which was mesmerising. I put this music up for her, which seemed to help her.

In fact when I got into the Nostromo, er, into the shuttle also at the end, I lined the side of the set with fifteen-inch speakers and I played Tomita in the shuttle absolutely full-bore [i.e. maximum volume].

So rather than a silent set and me shouting "Action!" and Sigourney [Weaver] rushing around in silence, I said "Do you want some assistance?". She said "Yeah" - I said, well listen to this! And I had The Planets by Tomita and she liked that because it helped her to have that massive orchestration around her, and we had it right up!

    Yours spacily,
    Ben
