That was from Lance's review of The Planets 2003. My copy came yesterday, and the
falsetto vocal he is talking about is actually Tomita's own voice, and its mixed much more
to the fore on this mix. It's distinctive anyway, because it starts off 'Venus' a capella. His
vocal re-occurs on 'Neptune' (which I found profoundly relaxing to listen to in surround.)

Great recording, great multichannel mix - buy it!

If that really is Tomita's voice, I wonder if he did some kind of pitch
shifting via tape speed doubling or other means. That really did sound like a
    female's voice to me.

I guess it's time for another listen. :)

    Andrew,

Yes, it really is his voice; I met him for the second time in 2000
while he was recording second version of The Tale Of Genji at
Whitfield Street Studios in London. I assumed that the sound in
question was Mellotron somehow or a particularly well-programmed
synthesizer; no-one was more surprised than me to find out that it
was his voice all along, and he took great delight in telling me
    this!

It's kind of obvious that it's a human voice when you think about it,
but for 25 years I thought different! In the new mix of Venus, Tomita
pushes the vocal mich higher in the mix; in fact I didn't realise it
    was there until now.

I'm sure I have mentioned this in a previous message; I will check
the message archive before John set up this Yahoo Group.

It does sound like he processed it in some way, I'd agree.

    Best wishes,
    Ben
