Zanshi is dead. This question, therefore, cannot be answered.

dude, where have you been? I've missed having you around, having someone with which to share a 'civil disagreement' :D Seriously (risks inflating an ego) we need you around here.. Even if Zanshi is dead, the other 3 of you can come around anytime

I know that I'm not Zanshi but I have talked with him about this a few times ;) But the reason why I dislike those tv networks is because they censor everything they can get their hands on, and censorship is actually a fascist ideal. I know that people should have freedom of speech to say whatever they like... but well if they are worried about the younger crowds then they should put the "bad stuff" on late at night without censoring it. I think that we had a conversation about this before on M2A...

Anyways yeah Mangatoanime isn't the same without you GNZ, we need to be enlightened and challenged and hear your great opinions on everything!

Speaking of censorship, now that BBC has a cable/satellite channel here in the US, they're definitely holding to the same standards as European programming, as in, well...

For example, they showed Get Carter a few nights ago, and it was definitely uncensored. Of course, that meant there were quite a few things there that made me uncomfortable. But that's beside the point I guess. I just find it interesting that a channel included in a basic satellite package doesn't do any censoring, and it really shows a different outlook between Europe and the States, where even satellite and cable channels do a lot of editing.

They censor films on US tv? That sucks ***. Over here we get everything. Except sometimes on UTV, because they suck monkey nuts.

OK, I'd like to weigh in with my views on networks and censorship.

Censorship sucks. But what the networks do does not bother my at all. why? The kind of censorship that rankles me is what I'll call 'forced censorship.' I'm talking about when someone reads your mail and crosses stuff out, or refuses to send it. I'm talking about when the newspapers are only allowed to print certain things.

But the networks are not forcing censorship on you. They may cut out parts of movies, but no one is preventing you from going to get that movie in its uncut form down at the video store. No one is forcing you to not get HBO.

Sad fact is, networks are free. They depend on advertising. They get more advertising when more people watch. To make sure their audience is as large as possible, they edit some films to make them more palatable to everyone, to cut out parts that are offensive to some, so that the largest amount of people possible will watch.

Also, since it is free, and not you, but advertisers are paying for it, they owe you nothing. Of course, they want you. If you leave, that sucks, but all those millions of kiddies can watch cause their parents allow it. In other words, free TV with unedited stuff is not a right.

You want the full film? You can get it. Just not on the networks. Which is why you hate them, so I am come full circle. It is perfectly reasonable to not like them I guess, you get what you pay for, so just don't watch the networks and pay for the real film. Looks like I agree with you hehe.

I guess all I ended up saying is why I don't mind the networks 'censorship' or find it evil. Annoying it may be, but evil and fascist? nah.

TV's not free if you get cable or satellite ;).

Anyway, let it be known that I never "hated" NBC, or any other network, or any other thing. They just annoy the [PURAZUMA!] out of me with their cheap programming. Reality TV, sitcoms, it all disgusts me. Opiate of the masses.

As for censorship, it can actually be entertaining sometimes. It's not so bad when a movie's coarse language is editted out by replacing it with a sample by the same actor or a reasonably-drawn facsimile. TBS does that a lot. It bothers me when other networks just blank things out or insert a word that makes no sense. I remember once Romy & Michele's High School Reunion was on City TV (Canadian network) and some American network at the same time. On City, they kept saying "f--k off" and stuff like that, but on the other network, it was "flake off". What in the name of Needles is "flake off" supposed to mean? Not that that was a good movie to begin with ...

Hehe once again we find ourselves in perfect agreement, after working our way there from opposite ends.

True, sat/cable isn't free, that's the point. The networks that come with it aren't either of course, which I suspect is what you are saying. Theoretically, you could put up some rabbit ears and get networks for free..

But yeah, I hate the stuff they show ('reality TV' etc) , the censorship I understand why it can be annoying. Agreed there. And we don't either of us hate them.

Sheesh. We're good at doing this little tango towards agreement.

Ah, the futility of war. Two opposite sides that end up forced to work together ... or, in our case, who just do anyway ... or something that makes sense. Yes, pretend I said something that makes sense.
