For the people who are too damn lazy to go to Google. (and that's a hint btw)

    May contain Spoilers! beware!

Fushigi Yuugi is about a girl named Yuuki Miaka. One day she and her best friend Hongo Yui go to the National Library and find an ancient Chinese novel called the Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho. The opening page reveals a picture of the large red peacock, followed by this text:

"This is a story about a girl who got the seven Seishi of Suzaku. She obtained omnipotent power and made her wishes come true. The story itself is an incantation. Whomever finishes reading it will receive this power. As soon as the page is turned, the story will become the truth and begin."

Miaka and Yui glance up at each other, wondering what it means, when all of a sudden they are surrounded by a red light from the book. When the two girls wake up, they are shocked to discover that they are somewhere in the middle of an open flatland. As they stand, confused, wondering where they are and which way they should go, they are suddenly attacked by a group of men. Yui, who is grabbed first, cries out to Miaka for help. Miaka, being quick on her feet, tries to fight the men, but soon finds herself overpowered. All looks hopeless, until all of a sudden, a young man appears. The man solidly beats the brutes with a series of fantastic martial arts moves. Miaka is surprised when she notices a glowing red character of "Oni" or "Ogre", on the young man’s forehead during the battle.
After the attackers depart, the man turns to Miaka and Yui, quickly demanding a reward for his service. When he discovers that neither girl has any money, he promptly deserts them. Yui angrily rushes after the man, as Miaka sits and searches her pockets for change. While Miaka is distracted, the strange red light surrounds Yui a second time. When Miaka looks up, Yui is gone.
Yui finds herself back in the library and starts to read the Shi Jin Ten Chi Cho and realizes what happened to her and Miaka has been recorded into the book.
Back in the book, Miaka believes that the reason for Yui's disappearance is that the man that saved them kidnapped her. So she goes on a hunt for the man. While in a town searching for him, Miaka is tricked by another man claiming he knows the one with the "oni" sign on his forehead. He leads her into a deserted area where some more men attack her. then once more, the man with the "oni" sign on his forehead saves her. His name is Tamahome and Miaka doesn't know it but he is one of the seven Suzaku Seishi. Tamahome decides to help her and the two later on see the Emperer of the country she is in (Konan). Tamahome makes a remark about how he'd wish he'd have just one of the jewel's on the Emperer's crown. Miaka does the 'moronic thing' and rushes to catch up with the emperer. once she does she asks for one of his jewel's but makes a fool of herself and trips causing a big commontion. She and Tamahome are then locked up. When they escape they get separated and Miaka meets Hotohori, another Suzaku Seishi and the Emperer of Konan she had talked to previously. Miaka doesn't realize it's him until Tamahome finds her. Hotohori then explains to Miaka about the Four countries in the Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho, and how each has a beast god. the one for Konan is Suzaku. It is said that when the country is in danger, a girl will come form the other world to become the miko of that country's god and that she will find all seven of her seishi and summon the god, bringing peace to the country. So, Miaka is made the Suzaku no Miko, and her quest for her Seishi begins!

Now Yui is reading every single thing that is happening to her friend and eventually Yui makes the decision to help Miaka return to the real world, and uses the power of her friendship to assist in the return. However, during the attempt to bring Miaka home, a blue light surrounds Yui, and she is pulled into the Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho a second time. Miaka realizes Yui was pulled into the book and goes after her.
Well Yui lands in Kutou, the enemy country of Konan, where she is attacked by two men. However no one comes to her rescue as she faints. When Yui wakes up she is in the care of a Kutou Shogun (General) named Nakago (who is a Seiryuu Seishi), who had taken her to the Emperor’s palace, noting her strange clothes. Nakago lies to her telling her that she was raped, which is untrue for Nakago killed the men before they could rape her. Everyday Nakago tries to convince her to become the Seiryuu no Miko, Seiryuu being Kutou's beast god. Yui refuses until one day...
Miaka and Tamahome eventually come for Yui, and on their way back Miaka does the 'moronic thing' once more and tells Tamahome she came back for him (because the two are now in love). Yui hears this and is hurt for she thought Miaka came for her and she too loves Tamahome. So Yui goes back to Nakago and agrees to become the Seiryuu no Miko, the enemy of Miaka.
And thus, it's a race between Yui and Miaka to find all their seishi and summon their god first and be granted their three wishes.

    FY Terms
Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho- the Book Miaka and Yui were brought into. Pioneer Entertainment translated it best as the Universe of the Four gods.
Suzaku- The Red Phoenix God of the south, that protects Konan. Miaka was it's Miko.
Seiryuu- The Blue Dragon God of the east, that protects Kutou. Yui was it's Miko.

Shinzaho- when the beast god has been called, all it's power goes into one item, the shinzaho. The genbuu Shinzaho was a necklace, while the Byakkou Shinzaho was a mirror, 9and the Suzaku one was Miaka and Tamahome's love, ala their baby)
Rekka Shinen!- what Tasuki says in order for his fan(which is a tessen, metal fan) to blast out fire. It's closest translation is 'Blazing Divine Flames.'
No da/Na no da- what Chichiri says after every sentence. It's part of Japanese speech... It has no menaing. It's like Japanese eh, but Chichiri uses it acessivly (like the americans seem to think Canadians do with eh).
