Anime What if..?

    What if you worked under the leadership of "baka" Yuriku?Would you be fond of her? Would you rebel against her?

    I wouldn't really call Yurika an idiot. I mean sure she acts like a self absorbed airhead, but when it comes to military strategy she's pretty smart. Aside from what happened when they went to Mars for the first time, all of Yurikas battle plans succeeded. So long as you could keep her mind off of Akito she was a very capable officer.

    I agree with Ak1t0! Even though she acts like a child, but she is still a capable and trustworthy captain. She may act childish because of Akito, but hey she never seen Akito for a long time! I think it is her way of expressesing how she treasures those childhood memories!

    I'd work with Captain Yurika Misumaru. I would never rebel against her.

    I beg to differ...

    Every minute I spent on the Nadesico under the "leadership skills" of Yurika would be nerve wracking...

    I think partly why I find this series so hard to accustom myself to is how incapable the Nad crew seems...

    I literally groan to think of how badly it would be to have to be a crewer where the the only real members are oft ignored...

    First off...I would like to admit I have not finished watching this series... I'm on the last 6 or 7 eps if I remember from aways ago..

    Second, I would like to state that my opinion is in no way necessarily "true". It just happens to be my personal take on the situation, and I mean not to sleight the anime in any way. Just because I personally seem to take a disliking to it, doesn't make it a bad anime. It just makes it one I don't like. :p So, if I made any remarks that were offensive to anyone, they weren't intentional.

    I will rebut your very interesting statement, however.

    First, off, let me define "incapable":

    in·ca·pa·ble
    a.Lacking the necessary ability, capacity, or power: incapable of carrying a tune; incapable of love.

    b.Unable to perform adequately; incompetent: an incapable administrator (i.e. Me! :D).

    And looking at the definition above, wouldn't you say a capable person would be the one to do the job right? That's the point I was attempting to make...;)

    So, you start ok, trying to push off the opinion that the crew *is* capable, but then you change partway through the post to tell me it's all an act. Which version am I supposed to take? :D

    And then, why is it an act?

    I wish I could believe that, but no. If it was an act, how come they're only serious when they're around the enemy, and complete idiots the rest of the time?

    As for points #2 and #3, you lost me. I don't follow how being in Space or wanting peace would make you act like an idiot...:confused:

    I personally would like to work under her, or with her. She is really clear about her goals, even if they are to pursue a man. She has shown she is brilliant in strategies as well. Of course these are all opinions. the main fact is its an anime, an anime made for entertainment, laughs, action and some intrigue.
    I don't like digging really deep into some anime. Destroys the work and wastes my time :p

    hai! I would find it rather fun to have Yurika as the captain of a ship that I am on. She may seem like a baka on the outside, but she graduated from (military?) school with high grades and she does have bery good strategies, like the whole space fishing strategy ;)

    The whole crew of Nadesico seem very "eccentric" but that's part of the humour in the show ^^

    Some commentary on Yurika (and the rest of the crew)

    First,I wish to contest the point that "eccentricities" in the crew of the Nadesico (and Yurika in particular) somehow makes them "incapable." For one thing, our cultural history is replete with examples of highly capable "eccentrics." Steven Hawking, a cripple (for want of a better word), is regarded as one of the most brilliant minds in modern physics. Vincent Van Gogh's psychological problems (I'm not sure on the exact nature,but I think he was bipolar) didn't stop him from becoming a world-renowned artist. Albert Einstein flunked algebra at least once,and his physical appearance practically screams "eccentric." Edgar Allen Poe was in love with his cousin ("Annabelle Lee" and "The Raven" were both written in response to her death at the hands of tuberculosis).

    Secondly, whenever I see Yurika in action, I am reminded that this is not the first time an anime has featured a protagonist that is, from all outward appearances, an incompetent baka. A certain 20-year-old "irresponsible" captain comes to mind. Oftentimes in such anime, the character's eccentricities wind up being an asset. Some of Yurika's best plans came from her obsession with Akito (most notably, the "space fishing" that ThatGuy! mentioned). As for that certain kanchou mentioned above who joined the military for the "easy life," do you honestly think that the Soyokaze would've survived the action against the Raalgon patrol fleet and, later, the Raalgon Admiral's fleet had he not been more interested in saving his own skin than in "doing the right thing" and sticking to the military's regs?

    In the final analysis, I wouldn't mind serving on the crew of the Nadesico, even if half the time I find myself agreeing with Ruri's analysis.

    In all likelyhood I'd be a mech pilot, and odds are that while occaisionally I'd break out of formation and do my own thing, I'd probably follow her orders most of the time.

    ...

    y'know I could -SO- see this branching off into a substory about a bitter pilot who gets attention after Akito is taken...
