I disagree, I looked around and some sites say what you said but others didnt mention if the work had to be based on existing stories or not

"Doujinshi is the term for "autonomous comics," or comics written and distributed by independent and often amateur devotees of anime."

But then i looked up the word in Wikipedia and it says it doesnt have to be based on existing series but they normally are

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doujinshi

( :anime: ooh yeah i was right you were wrong ooh yeah ooh yeah!!! :anime: (I dont win many arguments as you can tell :sweat2: ))

No, it says that they draw on the original series but may include stuff from other series or original characters. Doujinshi = manga-format fanfiction. Just think of it that way.

    UrbanDictionary.com says this:

A Japanese word meaning a work published by a specific interest group for other members of that interest group. Doujinshi usually refers to fan made manga or soft. Because of the copyright laws in Japan fans can get away with making and selling doujinshi featuring their favorite characters from anime and video games although doujinshi also often times feature original characters and stories. A common misunderstanding is that all doujinshi are x-rated fan works but this is not always the case.

Doujinshi: Doujinshi are Japanese comic books (manga) drawn by fans.

    - taken from Writers university, originally from the english dicionary

DOUJINSHI:<doh-gin-she> 1) any type of non-commercial printed material with a limited distribution, created, published, and sold as a hobby by the authors and/or by their associates. 2) manga doujinshi or a doujinshi featuring material related to manga, anime, etc. 3) any type of non-commercial publication with minimal distribution and privately shared by a small group of individuals, such as informal scholarly journals.

    - taken from Otaku translators reference dicionary

    Doujinshi

alternative words: Dojinshi, Doujin shi, Dojin shi
keywords: general , manga , publishing
    related topics: Doujin
explanation: "Shi" means "magazine" in Japanese. So, "doujinshi" is a weak circulation magazine made specially for "doujin", though it may be sold to the public. There exist doujinshis for any activities but the manga doujinshis are by far the most widespred and active ones because of their commercial interest. Many famous mangaka like Clamp have begun they careers by publishing in a doujinshi before passing to a mass circulation magazine. It is a true fish-pond for young talents in Japan

-taken from japanese dictionary of manga and video games

I could post more but i dont want to get into trouble for spamming

And sorry Dilandau but it looks like your thread has turned into an argument about definitions

"related to anime, manga, etc" is referring to essentially fanfiction.

I recently made a small manga (with my production team project blowfish, if you want to see it its in rems gallery)

By the definitions i showed prevously, it IS doujinshi, however it contains entirely original characters and plot (even if it is entirely comprised of panel and narrative i.e. no dialogue)

A doujinshi can be related to manga in its style, and i suppose even in its themes and not be using characters or plots from another series

Therefore the definitions above support my idea of doujinshi

(the definitions are self explanatary the work can be but doesnt have to be based on other peoples work is all im trying to say)

You realise that "hobby groups" means "fans of a certain anime/manga", right?

Well, yes, frequently doujinshi are fan-created amateur works based on an existing professionally-produced anime or manga series. You have to remember, though, that "doujinshi" is a pretty broad term - like "anime" or "manga," the definition is going to vary by who's using it. In Japan, anime is just animation, and manga is just general comics - however, outside of Japan, these terms have come to pertain to Japanese-created animation and comics only. Likewise, "doujinshi" is usually considered to mean the unofficial manga-style publications based on pre-existing series (including non-anime works, like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings doujinshi).

Adding to this is the fact that many doujinshi artists are actually professionals - so they may not be amateur works at all, but professional-manga-quality fanworks.

Besides which, for the purpose of my thread, I was referring specifically to fandom-based doujinshi. You mentioned Mega Tokyo, which is neither doujinshi nor manga in the "conventional" sense - it's manga-style, but not actually a printed Japanese manga; it's a webcomic.

Let's just say... If you look up "doujinshi" on a search engine, what are you gonna get? Not original works, but series-based fanworks. Sorry for the confusion.

Koushi Rikudou has put out Excel Saga doujinshi. It's not always fans, though I'm sure Rikudou is a fan of his own work :D

While not all are necessarily based on other's work, that is the first thing (and usually the only thing) people think of when they hear "doujinshi." As any linguist will tell you, words mean what people think they mean.

    I like Chejo's definition though.

And Maki Murakami of Gravitation did an entire series of yaoi doujinshi based on the manga, entitled "Gravitation: Remix."

Probably the defining point of doujinshi is that they aren't official. Sometimes the mangakas do it, but usually it's other fans and artists who create doujinshi. Everything I've ever seen referred to as a doujinshi was based on a pre-existing series, movie, or even on the lives of actors or singers.

    :catgirl:

Mamiyaotaru sums up what i've been trying to say very nicely, nothing left to say except:

READ MY COMIC OR DOUJINSHI OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT, JUST READ IT OR I WILL SH*T ON YOU(its in rem's gallery cos she's the artist k :anime: )

(disclaimer: please dont take offence to the above, the doujinshi is nothing like this, I just want people to like me  )

Nnnnnnnnnno, he was referring to non-canon (as in never-happened-in-the-official-timeline) stories that just happened to be made by the creator... essentially still doujinshi. YOUR COMIC, on the other hand, is NOT doujinshi, since it is essentially canon in your comics universe.

It'd be like me writing a story in a completely original setting and calling it fanfiction.

...You don't even say please. Nuts to you.

Then stop being obtuse and use manners... SELL your comic to me. Make me WANT to read it by telling me what I have to look forward to! Make it sound appealing! Hard sells DO NOT WORK.

Hmm well i'll have to wait till he hits this thread again to check that one

Its not much of a sell but here goes

the comic is stand alone, it's based on a poem written by myself while listening to a song about a girl who is in love with a gay guy, but the story isn't about that, that was the inspiration. it's short, sweet and our first attempt, it's the very essence of shoujo (i've said all this before, but hey-hum. To say anymore takes away from actually reading the thing, its simple, it doesn't require an in depth pitch, but I realise if I want anyone to read it i'll have to come up with something)

I wasn't being obtuse i was making a joke, I know hard sells don't work all the time, but I want poeple to give their opinions on it and so i'll try anything. (and the thing about wanting friends, that was a joke too, hence the smilies used, I dont use smilies if i'm trying to be serious), and if you're going to read it, then read it, if not dont waste time telling me that you're not going to bother. (yes i realise you were making a joke)

If anyone's interested, we're working on a shounen manga (long term project, as in not a one-shot but a series) called blood sin (the pitch takes some writing and is taking longer to write than the work itself, but the concept art is in rem's gallery)

I was talking about how the creator of Excel Saga made some unofficial works based on Excel Saga that are doujinshi. Although.. IIRC Daitenjin came out before Excel Saga (was it Excel's first appearance?), and as such wasn't really based on anything at the time.

If so, unlicensed or unofficial seems to be the only way I can pin it down (though I still think "fan works based on something else" is the definition you'll hear the most, the de-facto definition if you will)

Anyway, I'll check out your manga, but I'm not sure if it can be called a doujinshi :D By the de facto definition definitely not, but perhaps by the "official" (de jure) definition it can be, in the same way Daitenjin was, which seems to be what you are saying :D

    the def

    doujinshi
    (n) (1) magazine published by fans; fanzine; (2) publication aimed at a particulat hobby group; (3) publication sold directly, and not via commercial publishers.

that is the def of the word, not just they way it is used.
like with alot of words there is more than one way to use it, all are correct.
