I am one for a good horror book. There is nothing better than a good scary story before bed.

I prefer Fantasy books, along the lines of Terry Prachett and/or Neil Gaiman. But also the likes of asian writers such as chinese (my nationality), japanese, korean etc.

As with many other people here, I'm pretty big on the fantasy scene. It has been my primary genre of choice for at least 15 years (probably more like 18 or 19, all things considered).

I do read outside of the fantasy genre, but it's usually because either someone recommended the book to me or because I have to read it for a class at school. I'll get recommendations in all sorts of genres, and I've highly enjoyed nearly all of them to this point. Most of the reading for my classes is good too.

I've found myself beginning to grow weary of the fantasy genre because a lot is really formulaic. Granted the same could be said of my favourite genre, sci fi, but I find it's a lot easier to find quality books in the genre, like Calculating God, Dune or The Forever War. Even the more soft, less philosophical books like The Risen Empire are more enjoyable than fantasy/modern day settings in my view.

I like fantasy, love, and adventure.
Sometimes horror but only in the daytime and my parents are home.

I honestly think that kind of statement can be made about any genre of literature. Even the greatest authors can be formulaic...I mean, look at Jane Austen. Nearly everything she wrote had a spunky, out-spoken main female character with trials of some sort. They also all included attractive, male characters who ended up marrying the girls by the end of the book. And the handsomest, most eligible male character almost always ended up with the main female lead. Predictable? Of course it is. But that predictability is at least part of what makes it so enjoyable.

Still, I do have to agree that a large body of the fantasy genre seems to be excessively formulaic. I've found that some of the best and most original stuff being published lately in the genre is aimed at the young adult market. Sure you still have the old favorites publishing in the adult market, but a lot of them seem to be relying on tried and true formulas for their works. In some cases, the forumlas being followed aren't very good ones...*cough*Robert Jordan*cough*

Part of that may be due to the fact that fantasy seems to focus largely on the battle between good and evil in many different scales. You get the grand, sweeping epics along with the smaller, less dramatic works where the focus is one character or one group.

I haven't had that much trouble finding literature that I enjoy to read, but I know that I'm quite easy-going when it comes to my choice of reading material. It honestly doesn't take all that much to please me.

I did concede that my favorite genre does it too.

Anyway WAY too much fantasy relies on "find and/or destroy item x to achieve objective y". I don't mean a small portion, I mean more than any fan cares to admit. While this can be ok if it has interesting characters, I'd like to see a lot more risks taken in the genre. EVERY genre.

You know what would be great? A book about an orcs life, from birth to death, where we get to see their society. A book about a wizard who slowly gets sucked in by dark magics only to eventually find redemption one way or another. Or a book where civilization is falling, it CAN'T be prevented, and it deals with the reactions of the remaining powers or something. I'm sure all of these books have actually been written at some point, but you sure as hell won't have an easy time finding them amongst all the cookie cutter Lord of the Rings fan fiction-esque crap.

I really enjoy action with combat with a hint of romance. To me, those are really exciting. One of those books might be the "Fearless" Series. Has anyone read it?

Fantasy, because it takes my mind off the horrors of reality and gives me a larger imagination.

Horror, since I like a good scare once in a while....

Humour, since I like humour. Humour lightens the mood... or thats what I think.
