I'm writting your my High School newspaper. Of course it's hard to even pick out what people would read.

I know when I was a freshman I read some of it but not all. Most of the topics were of very boring, but thats not how it should be.

so please give me some ideas.

Controversy, within its limits, is always an eye-cather, at least it was in my school. There were racial articles discussing certain things that went down in our school, and use of profanity and how it makes people "stupid" and so on and so forth. It really depends on what you want to do; make a point, or get attention.

    I would like a pizza.
    Ha ha ha.

No, anyway, make something eyecatching, eyebrow raising, interest provoking! Nothing about the stars or Hollywood, becuase that would be shallow, but something with DEPTH, like, how about... child slavery? or SARS? or life in an underdeveloped country, like Cambodia or Romania?

Maybe you could write about what the world would be like of one major event in history didn't happen or happened differently. Like a World War or something.

You should write about somthing that most people in your school like. Somthing that really gets you thinking. Which personally i like article like that. Or write about somthing that effects most people. those are my ideas.

You could write about trends in your community, but you have to be careful not to offend nor misportray the people who are into them (especially if you have unreliable info). Philosophical articles about how students act can be interesting, but again you'll need to have good data to base things on. There was one girl who tried to compare girl-boy relationships to hens & roosters--since it was hard to understand what she was getting at, and since she didn't know how to add power to her writing, it was a pretty weak article. Made people go:

I remember the school newspaper at my old high school. The writers in it sucked! (I bet my friends and I could've written better stuff!) I even wonder if the editors themselves did their jobs. One guy even did this lil tiny article that was 90% one-sided, plus it was all based on his opinions (he couldn't even back up his opinions), was poorly written, and overall made him sound whiny & pathetic rather than thought-provoking. Then there were articles that tried to be helpful, like in telling students about contraband items (objects not allowed in school)... but that was kinda a waste of time since everyone already knows about that stuff!

You know what else I wanna see in school papers? Puzzle stuff, like word-searches or connect-the-dots. Cartoon strips would be cool too--my high school's paper never had any cartoons (weak!). Does your newswriting class include cartoonists? Finally, another thing I wanna see are comparison articles about products, movies, etc. In one article, you could compare different brands of skateboards/surfboards, in another you compare different streetracing cars and/or tuning parts. (Depends on what your school is into.) Then you can have one about different clothing tops for girls, not just the brands but comparing different styles (you can do the same with pants and shorts). These articles could help people decide what to buy, but of course you gotta be a good writer and know how to write comparison articles.
