I'd like to watch Gundam, always been a big fan of mecha but never seen any episodes. I noticed some of the 'later, newer' series look kind of childish and corny compared to some of the 'older' hardcore ones. What's the deal?

Well the new ones are kind of,... bla, gundam wing was a little choppy for me since the gundams were so invincible, and G gundam is kind of limited with the story line and the shining finger never pleased me:dizzy2:

So if your going to watch Gundam I would avoid those and go for 8th ms team, 0083 stardust memories (favorite), and anything to do with shar and the red comet ;)

Well, to answer your question. Gundam is seperated into two universes. The UC (Universal Century) and the AU (Alternate Universe). The UC series, most of which are from the 80's, are very serious and one of them (Zeta Gundam) is pretty dark. With the exception of ZZ Gundam, UC series are considered the best.
The AUs, which began with G Gundam, are newer than most UC series, some of the AUs haven't been very good, mainly Gundam Wing, for a being a lame compressed version of UC Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam to Char's Counterattack. G Gundam was fair, Gundam X was good, but it was canceled, Turn A is actually very good in comparison with the others, and SEED started good, but is pretty weak now.

So, the older ones are more serious in terms of story, or "hardcore" as you would put it. While the newer ones focus on good looks.

I dunno about that, I've watched upto episode 30, and pretty good now. I agree that it started well, and then fell apart a bit in the middle, but when they get down to earth its rather good. Very intense fighting and (Spoilers) some of the main characters die including one of Kira's school friends and also another Gundam pilot.
