Inu-Yasha What's up with Sesshoumaru's shoulder fur?

Okay, something's been questioning me ever since i saw this comic some one drew of the whole inu yasha gang and Sesshoumaru. Kagome was wondering why sesshoumaru has this long fur thing on his shoulders. I would post it, but i think it might not be too appropiate for lil' ones...i'll say pg rated. you can message me if you want to see the comic though.

the question i'm asking is what do you think is the reason why Sesshoumaru wears that big fur thing on his shoulders. Doesn't it get annoying for him to have this big thing flowing in the wind? is it just for look? does it belong to someone he admired? is it some crazy type of armour? or to keep his shoulder warm? i don't know...
