    Well, let's see ...

Back in the day I played a little bit of Magic, but was more heavily into Overpower and Star Wars CCG. Got into Pokéemon for a bit.
Now I'm more about the old fashioned card games. I play Euchre, Cribbage and Poker, mostly. For poker I'm all about no-limit Texas Hold 'Em (the Cadillac of card games).

I dabbled in M:tG a little bit, but I actually spent more time with the Pokemon TCG because I bought packs and resold the rares back when it first took off. XD That was one nice thing; back in the day, you could make a very solid Pokemon deck with nothing but cheap, nonfoil rare and commons. *chuckle* I tried Yu-Gi-Oh!, but I don't really have anyone to play it with, so I sold what I had. Same deal with Star Wars cards.

well, if you think about it, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and the such only last for a little while...Magic: The Gathering has been around since the early 80's and is still going strong...so...some games are better than others.

1995, according to Wizards of the Coast.
Speaking of Wizards, they are pretty much the money-making machines of the card game industry. It sometimes seems like they either develop or release everything big these days.

Used to. ^^ D&D (both the old-school second edition and 3rd Ed), a little of the Whitewolf games (Vampire: the Masquerade, mainly), a few other random RPG systems. Then, sadly, I moved away from my group. :/ Haven't been able to find a new one in the area I live in now.

And on the subject of M:tG having more staying power than Pokemon, YGO, etc - of course it does. Magic appeals to a broader audience, it has more complex rules and a wider variety of cards. From what I've seen, the kids who started out with Pokemon often graduated into playing M:tG when they were old enough to appreciate it. Besides, it's the only one of the games mentioned (besides "regular" card games and to some extent, the Star Wars TCG) that isn't primarily fad-based. Pokemon, Harry Potter, and YGO all rely mostly on fans of the original anime/book to get their initial player base, so as the fad dies down, so does the card game.

I would hardly call Hold 'Em a "regular" card game. For one thing, it's just about the only card game that's televised. For another, it's not enough to just play the cards. You have to play your opponent more than anything.
Of course, I'm probably just saying that because I'm obsessed.

also magic also appeals more because the market for them is more steady due to its popularity. many cards arent produced in small numbers resulting in a buying market that holds very steady...

Well, Americans don't play euchre right. See, there's several sets of rules:
    1. British/Canadian. Standard rules. If you order your partner to pick up the card, you are playing that hand alone.
    2. American. Same thing, but you don't have to go alone when ordering up your partner. Basically, because American euchre players aren't as hard-core as the rest of us.
    3. Australian/New Zealand. I'm not sure the specifics, but I remember reading on a Hoyle site a while back that this third type does exist.
Actually, last semester there was a big euchre tournament here at WLU. I entered with a friend of mine, and we came very close to winning, but then we lost one of the final rounds.
