Question: What religion do you think predominates in Japoness? I only ask because this is important for a fic.

EDIT: The question should have been "Whom to pray too".

I would guess probably Shinto, because that's the national religion of Japan. I really can't be of too much help here, though. I just hate to see an unanswered question.

I believe, Shinto and Zen Buddhism were prominent religions in Japan; of course this was around the age of the samurai. Also i believe Bushido may have been treated like a religion. By now there are more than likely other religions and faiths in Japan.

First off, Bushido (the Way of the Sword) was part of traditional Shinto during Japan's feudal periods.
Secondly, it's Buddhism, not Zen Buddhism, that is commonly practised in Japan. The two are actually separate religions, and are quite different.

That's it for me! I'll leave you to this, then!

Thanks for your input, guys. Hm... this info definitely gives an interesting angle to my fan fic, and probably one that will require a little bit of research as it's been awhile since I studied world religions in depth.

Buddhism was introduced to Japan in 743.IN 1191 Zen Buddhism was introduced into Japan from china. Both were practiced as far as I can tell.

There was also Christianity In Japan which was introduced in 1549 by St. Francis Xavier and his followers. And the Christian population in Japan grew to over 200 000... but then after Shogun Ieyasu died many Christians were crucified or exiled out of Japan.

This is sad ... we're bickering over which type(s) of Buddhism is(are) practised in Japan ... A dark day for otakus everywhere. What happened?

Are we really bickering? all I can see is just a slight disagreement on which type of Buddhism was(is) practiced in Japan. However if I have caused this bickering, I apologize.

Zen it is. All I get is Zen Buddhism from my Japanese History teacher. I would think Japanese people had a right to choose what form they wanted to learn. ?

Anyways, for Aoi's fic, it may be best to use a Shinto-Buddhist hybrid.

I know there is a lot of Zen Buddhism in Japan, I still remember parts of my religions of the world class :) Prolly some 'regular' buddhism as well, but I would say it's mostly Zen and Shinto.

Not that this hasn't been addressed already, but it can't hurt to throw another voice into it.
