Anime Why can't they get it right!!??

    Why!? Why do they not do it right!!!!???

    *ahem* I mean, does anyone have any idea why some official subs have the words changed when it's plainly obvious that they're saying something completely different?
    (eg, in the brittish GW sub, they say "thankyou" in the subtitles when they're really saying something like, "be careful.")

    It just doesn't make sense!

    Depending on the quality of the dub, you'll see this. It's easy to realise that sometimes you need to change what you say in order to flow through with the character's mouth movements. That "thank you" might be in context of the entire dialogue. It all depends. However, I didn't exactly LIKE the GW dub, so, it's just those dubbers being stupid.

    Ranma, however, has pretty good dubbing. And even though it's very americanized voices (I forgot WHO didn't like Akane here, I can sorta sympathize though) the changes in sub->dub dialogue fits in context. *shrugs*

    You can also take Cowboy Bebop into the latter category, where even though they dont' say what's on the subtitles, it's very good and keeps in flow with the story.

    Actually I've seen a couple instances of dubbing I prefer over the original.

    One that comes to mind is a little bit from Nadesico...

    Original
    "If I find out you had anything to do with it, I'll kill you!"
    "Kill me? You'd really kill me?"
    *cut to Yurika's fantasy. Akito is dressed in a detective outfit, she looks like a 1940's harlot*
    "I'll kill you!"
    then Yurika says something like Go For It... I forget. :rolleyes:

    But in the dub...

    "If I find you had anything to do with it, I'll kill you!"
    "Kill me? You'd really kill me?"
    *cut to Yurikas Fantasy*
    "I'll kill you with love!"
    "Ohhh, slay me!"
    and then they giggle like lovers.

    Somehow that just got me laughing for several minutes on end.
