Um... because they're drawn to appeal to those who will base a lot of their opinion of people on their looks?

Besides, anime isn't exactly out to adhere to realistic physics, hair colors, or bust-waist proportions.

And a little request, AsIaNgUrL... could you ease up on the chatspeak? ^^; It's awkward to read.

To Asiangurl: "Chatspeak" is a form of shortening sentences so you can type them faster. It is not well liked in forums. I realize that English is not your first language, now, but it would be appreciated if you could neaten up your sentences a little. You know, put capitals at the beginning of sentences and for names, avoid sentence fragments, and other things

She did respond to your question.

I was thinking the same response she had down as well. The reason why viewers find Anime characters to be appealing is because the characters are drawn appealing, whether it be cute, sexy, handsome, beautiful, etc. And of course, they're not drawn exactly proportionate hence the long legs, extra large eyes, tiny nose, and tiny mouth.

Overall, I think what draws viewers to 'liking' Anime characters is because of the surreal, perfect way they are drawn, animated, voiced, etc.

Because this society bases many of their opinions of people on aesthetics, even if they don't like to admit it. I once read somewhere that humans tend to find people/animals/toys/etc. with large eyes cute, which fits the anime criteria perfectly ;). I actually agree with the previous poster (though I don't think that covers even half of the assets that draw people to anime) in that some of the reason anime appeals to people (or certain people anyhow) is the perfect way most of them are drawn. I'd really like to see them come out with an anime focusing on a chubby girl or a guy with a bad haircut, knobby knees, and a hint of a unibrow. The only problem is that it probably wouldn't sell too well, and I think that's rather sad.

Yep - anime is very escapist, for the most part, and who wants to get lost in a fantasy with "ugly" people? As horrible as that sounds, it's the truth. It's a shame that there aren't more series - anime and otherwise - with "average"-looking protagonists, but people just don't like to watch that kind of thing (unless it involves said average people getting a makeover).

Then again, anime is an art form, and art is intended to be aesthetically pleasing most of the time.

That said, there are a lot of aesthetically-pleasing anime characters whom I don't find "hot." Some of them are even my favorite characters in a given series - but for whatever reason, their physical appearance is secondary. Take Dilandau, my forum namesake. If he were real, I might think he was pretty, but hot? Nah. He's too young for me. I love him for his personality. Of course, because he's a bit self-centered and designed to look "perfect" on the outside (as a contrast to how incredibly screwed up he is psychologically), he couldn't really work as an average-looking character. (Incidentally, if I had to pick a character from Escaflowne who I thought was "hot," it'd be scruffy, longhaired, unshaven Dryden. XD It's all in his attitude.)

    What she said ^
    :D
Unfortunately since some people rely on how we look to gauge who we are, anime is made "pretty" to attract said people. Supplying their Demand, my dears ;)

I think that anime particularly is attractive to people because it is an escape from reality. The over all art is perfect, and so are the character's
appearances. One of the most important aspects to anime, is the emotion. A story of a mysterious, beautiful, yet lonely girl, is attractive. The inhuman, or "Angel" type of story is what people are intrigued by. Not just the look, but the innocence. An then there's your long haired, business man, with a shallow personality, but then develops into a compassion lover. It's the appearance, and the personality thatworks together to make a character.
