Okay, I've been watching WHR, and there's something I just can't seem to clear up.

At the beginning of the series, Robin is dubbed a "Craft User". To me, this means "witch". Then, they spend the rest of the series hinting that she's a witch, without ever actually saying "Robin is a witch"... until the Inquisitor visits.

Anyway... my question. Does anyone KNOW if in the WHR mythos, Craft user = Witch? Or can one be a Craft user without necessarily being a witch? Kind of like how my PC can play SNES games without really being a SNES.

(I'm kind of hoping that someone has read more background info on WHR than I have, like in Newtype or something. Also, please no spoilers after episode 20, when she learns that the real ultimate technique is inside herself, not in the talisman.)

    Note: Slight Spoilers

Well I've went back and watched a few episodes again and this is what I could deduce from what I've viewed and it seems that this is sort of cleared up in around episodes 11, 12 and 13.

It seems as if "Craft-User" is a featherlight term pinned on "witches" who have become in control of their powers and use them as Hunters. This is sort of backed up by the inquisitor's interrogation of the Witch they capture to see if he could be a Hunter or not. This would explain Robin's dismay when Methuselah tells her that she is a witch in episode 12, and Methuselah points out that they are ALL witches, etc.

But then again we look at someone like Miho, the psychic, who seems to have some special power. I don't recall her being called a Craft-User in the series. Though this could be used as a point to show that perhaps there ARE some people capable of using powers like witches can, thus dubbing them Craft-Users.

So it could really go either way.

My understanding is that only those with witch genetic make-up could be used as hunters, since the effects of Orbo are too great to be used by normal humans. It was stated Zaizen was researching the effects of Orbo on normal humans and making an ultimate Orbo in which he didn't need to use the hunters. Since Zaizen believed the hunters were in the same group as the seeds and witches, this would mean all the hunters had dormant witch genes. ex. Amon's parents were both witches and he hoped his own witch blood would not awaken in him, Sakaki was hunted and Karasuma taken.
Robin had been told she was a Craft user, and thought this power was to be used to hunt witches. She was deceived. Once she received the ultimate technique, Amon then labeled her a witch, but truly she was always a witch.

What confused me, was how Solomon really decided who would be good as an employee/hunter and who was Orbo food. It couldn't just be that they knew what powers they had and decided they didn't need them and it's not like they interrogated every single seed and witch either. (It may be luck and in Robin's case, wasn't she not protected by Juliano?)
What made me mad, was at the beginning of the series, I thought that Solomon only went after witches who 'went bad' and used their powers for their own gain and murder. But then, I see them going after those who used their powers in secret, or not at all or just have the gene, like the mutants in X-men.

Actually if I remember correctly, only one of Amon's parents was a Witch. (He and Nagira are half-brothers. They had the same father, I believe it was, but Amon's mother was a Witch.)

Ya you are right, at the time it seemed confusing since he said 'our lives as seeds' but he was just referring to he and his mom.. he said for his father's sake she turned into a witch I wonder what happened.

I actually thought that the difference was that the Craft User was learning to control his/her power like Robin. A witch knows how to use his/her power (the whole air thing) like Robin later on. All hunters have a witch in the family. Those powers that are awaken can still be used as hunters until they gain the ultimate power. But Robin isn't an ordinary witch. I think that is the reason why she was allowed to go for so long and be called a craft user. The counsel (I think that is what it was called) looked in on her enough. After all she isn't like most witches if you remember what she found out about herself.
