So I insert myself here and try to explain...

Japanese written language is actually divided into 4 character sets, unlike the one we use (the alphabet) They are, Katakana, Hiragana, Kanji, and Romaji. the Katakana and Romaji are used for representing foreign words (except for chinese words) they are also used for Emphasis like we use italics (I've seen this done on billboards 'n such). Hiragana is for japanese words and grammer, and Kanji is for Chinese words and to express the ideas behind japanese words in writing. Kanji are used in compounds to create thoughts, then there will be a character or two of hiragana added to the total to take care of the grammer. Kanji represent anywhere from 1 to 3 syllables (maybe more, I'm not sure) or Mora in the japanese language.
Now, onto the next part, how do you read them? Katakana and Hiragana are all representative of either a vowel, a consonant and a vowel, or the letter 'n'. You read them by learning what sound they stand for, actually, a lot easier than our alphabet. I might suggest kanjistep.com for an excellent place to learn katakana, hiragana and even 100 of the kanji!
Romaji (translation: roman characters) are just our standard alphabet.

Now that I've confused the lot of you... questions?
