Well, Depeche Mode, Yahoo, Eraser (etc) all used the Synclavier as
a sampler/sound processing system, and I don't believe that any of that
sounded flat.I also know that many bands effectively used the Fairlight
synth, and that didn't sound flat either, when used properly.
They were both awesome samplers for the time, and it really depended
on what those people did with them.

Yeah, you are right! But I don't think Yazoo or Erasure did ever used
the Synclavier. Vince Clarke has a Fairlight-2 and you can hear some of
it's sound on the brilliant You and me both album. Sadly the CD sounds
terrible bad (flat and dull) due maybe to the recording and
manufactoring technologies regardless of how extensively were the
analog synths used on it. The 1st. Yazoo album's sound quality was
    brilliant.

Vince used the Synclavier for a while. I think it was after the Yazoo period
and perhaps before he started Erasure. I have an old magazine of E&MM
(British magazine) where he talks about his Synclavier and what it will be
able to do for him (cannot remember exactly what his motivation was).

My guess is that the old BBC micro computer that he had used for sequencing
for so long started to feel aged and maybe he wanted to replace it with
    something
    else... Just a guess though.

Yes. He used two CMI series II when he was on tour. One of them loaded
the next song and the other played the current song :)
