Yeah, we already know that not everyone uses that kind of sensitivity towards word choice. But I wouldn't say that makes Americans dumber. It's just that some of us are getting more sensitive, while others are getting tougher. Some of us can handle words like fag, goddamnit, polo (heh!), while others are ready to bust out their lawyer when they're only slightly "offended."

It does matter though that publishers play their part in making sure they won't get sued. On one hand, sexism and prejudice is wrong and sure, there should be some attention given to how stuff are written. But on the other hand, times change--people talk casually these days (greeting teachers by their first names with "wassup," and children who even swear at their parents) and therefore most people just don't care.

In a broader view, it's sometimes pretty stupid when people are ignorant and easily offended to the point where they file lawsuits/charges on some of the tiniest things--like that woman who convinced pretty much her whole town to try closing down an innocent comic shop just cuz it sold some manga with blood & gore in them. (I think it was in one of the older threads here or on another site.)

As for those weak reasons for renaming "The Old Man and the Sea," whatevahz! Modern casuality, poetic license, and freedom of speech should be enough to let people name fiction works whatever they want. (As well as write stories however way they want.) If people get nuts over "The Old Man and the Sea," I wonder how they'd react to modern books like "The blind Chick who sucks my..."

it's kidna funny, deeply saddening, and very very very creepy when you read that kind of stuff. i mean, i under stand WHY ppl want to change things, but i don't think they should.
imagine changing mark twain's Tom Sawyer...it really wouldn't be the same. taking out or changing the way ppl spoke would be horrible. it's like trying to make a word never exist(like the way they were editing movies and crap after the twin towers crashed)

I think one should be able to read WHATEVER they want to. Geez. -_-''
    FREE SPEECH!
For example they're trying to ban 'Of mice and men' by John Stienbeck who is an amazing author just becuase of his dirogitory racial terms... welcome to the real world, people, that happens EVERY day. books are showing us the harsh relality of the world, and trying to 'ban' certain words or books won't do anything good. I say let anything stay on the list, unless it's pro-nazism and supremacistsism. GRRRRR.

Because the teachers demand we all must conform and be perfect little boys and girls and therefore we must NOT cuss... that kinda doesn't apply to my school though... my religion teacher dropped his book and yelled out 'F*CKING HELL!' so loud... hahahah... but anyway, there's a fine line between what's proper and what's not. cussing to an extent is alright, but not if you're swearing like eminem. ^_^''
